Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, it was noted GOOD PROFIT had its tongue over the bit. Before being boxed, this was corrected. As the gates opened, YOUNG HERO lifted its front feet off the ground and was slow to begin. On jumping, ROYAL PERICLES and ULTRA FANTASY were crowded for room between GOLD STRIKER and MULTI MILLIONS which shifted in. CITY OF TROY and ALPHA MAIL were slow to begin. Making the Home Turn, BRAMBLE BLITZ hung out. In the Straight, ROYAL PERICLES hung out and at the 250 Metres was bumped by TCHAIKOVSKY which shifted in when giving ground. In the Straight, PHANTOM THIEF hung in. When questioned, Apprentice H W Lai (FIGURES) said he had been issued firm instructions by Mr A Lee, trainer of the horse, in the presence of the owners prior to the race. He said he had been asked to ensure the horse began well, cross to the fence in the lead and if possible steady the tempo, however, should TCHAIKOVSKY endeavour to cross into the lead, he should ensure he held the fence inside that horse. He added he was told to ride his mount along from the 600 Metres in an endeavour to establish a break on the field. He said FIGURES began well from the outside barrier, he rode along and was able to cross to the fence in accordance with his instructions shortly after the 1200 Metres where he immediately endeavoured to steady the tempo gradually, however, he shortly became aware TCHAIKOVSKY was shifting across from wider on the track. He said when this occurred near the 1000 Metres he rode FIGURES along to maintain his position in the lead. He said he was aware the tempo of the race was quick in the early stages, however, at the 600 Metres he commenced to ride FIGURES along in an attempt to follow his riding instructions. He said at the 300 Metres FIGURES gave ground quickly. Mr Lee confirmed the riding instructions issued. He said when FIGURES had performed at its best the horse had been ridden in a similar manner. Apprentice Lai was told his explanation would be recorded. When questioned, D Nikolic (BOBO WIN) said his mount, which he was riding for the first time in a race, was making an abnormal breathing noise and felt uncomfortable in its action. He said near the 600 Metres when BRAMBLE BLITZ improved on his inside and it was apparent the horse was travelling much better than BOBO WIN, he shifted his mount out slightly to prevent the horse becoming unbalanced as a result of being bumped by BRAMBLE BLITZ as that horse shifted into clear running. D Nikolic was told he was expected at all times to ride in a competitive manner. TCHAIKOVSKY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of TCHAIKOVSKY after the race did not show any significant findings. IMPERIAL APPLAUSE and GOLD STRIKER were sent for sampling.
