Racing Incident Report

THE ONE began awkwardly, resulting in M Nunes, its rider, becoming unbalanced. NAMJONG SKY and GALLANT WIN were slow to begin. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, MOONGLOW failed to muster speed. At the 1200 Metres, GALLANT WIN, which travelled greenly throughout, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of KING OF SHAVER, then near the 1000 Metres again got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SPICY HOT. After the 1100 Metres, PROGRESSING TIMES and QI'S PET were checked when crowded for room inside ARISTOCRACY which got its head up and shifted in abruptly when being steadied away from the heels of STRAIGHT VICTORY (F Coetzee) which shifted in momentarily when not properly clear. In the circumstances, F Coetzee was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, ARISTOCRACY after bumping with QI'S PET got its head up, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of STRAIGHT VICTORY. SPICY HOT and MOONGLOW, which were following, were steadied in consequence. O Doleuze (BAJAN BELL) explained from the outside gate the intention had been to drop the horse in with cover. He said BAJAN BELL began well and because of his intention to drop the horse in got its head up shortly afterwards and lost more ground than intended. He said as a consequence BAJAN BELL was in last position and he therefore shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. Y T Cheng (WILD ACE) said he had been instructed because of the anticipated lack of speed that he should endeavour to obtain a forward position. Mr C H Yip, trainer of WILD ACE, confirmed the riding instructions issued. He said he was concerned the race would be run at a moderate speed and therefore not suit horses ridden back in the field, therefore from a wide barrier he asked Y T Cheng to go forward and preferably endeavour to obtain a position with cover. Mr Yip said media reports quoting him as saying the horse would be taken back were inaccurate and indeed he had not spoken about the manner in which WILD ACE would be ridden in today's race with members of the press. D Whyte (SPICY HOT) was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said SPICY HOT obtained a nice position and travelled comfortably in the early stages, however, came under pressure near the 600 Metres and failed to respond. ARISTOCRACY and SPICY HOT were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ARISTOCRACY and SPICY HOT after the race did not show any significant findings. NOT QUITE PERFECT and WILD ACE were sent for sampling. After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on QI'S PET at the request of Trainer C S Shum. The Veterinary Officer said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, QI'S PET will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
