Racing Incident Report
NAMJONG FIGHTERS, which was standing with its head turned to the left, began awkwardly and lost ground. CITY SURFER was slow to begin. In the early stages, SPEED FIGHTER hung in. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, SPEED FIGHTER and KIMBO KID were checked when crowded for room inside FANTASTIC SUN (Apprentice K T Yeung) which shifted in despite having its head turned outwards. GOLD MEDAL WINNER and DASHING WINNER, which were following, were severely checked in consequence. In the circumstances, Apprentice Yeung was severely reprimanded and told whilst the Stewards accepted he had made some effort to prevent his mount from shifting ground, in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a far greater effort than he did on this occasion. In the middle stages and in the Straight, DASHING WINNER hung out. At the 500 Metres, KIMBO KID was checked away from the heels of SAVUTE (Apprentice H W Lai) which at this time shifted in away from the heels of HELENE ELEGANCE. Apprentice Lai was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. After the 200 Metres, SPEED FIGHTER, which was closing the race off fairly, was checked and shifted out to avoid the heels of KINGIFLY. F Coetzee (HELENE ELEGANCE) explained after arriving at the Start he was concerned his saddle had worked its way into a position which is further back than is usual. He said because of this he had HELENE ELEGANCE re-saddled by the attendants at the Start. He said on jumping the saddle on HELENE ELEGANCE immediately shifted backwards, placing him at a significant disadvantage in riding his mount. He said on straightening the saddle then commenced to shift towards the right hand side and as a consequence he did not ride his mount out. When questioned, W M Lai (NAMJONG FIGHTERS) said after straightening his mount got its head on the side and was inclined to hang out. He said because of this it took him some time to ensure his horse was properly balanced before he commenced riding it out fully. He said NAMJONG FIGHTERS closed the race off strongly when being ridden out. W M Lai was told his riding in the Straight of NAMJONG FIGHTERS was of concern to the Stewards and he should ensure his mounts are properly tested where circumstances permit. HELENE ELEGANCE and SUPREMACY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HELENE ELEGANCE and SUPREMACY after the race did not show any significant findings. GOLD MEDAL WINNER, FANTASTIC SUN and NAMJONG FIGHTERS were sent for sampling.
