Racing Incident Report
CONTRIBUTION was withdrawn on 24.4.18 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter WIN FOR CHARITY (S Clipperton). Before being allowed to race again, CONTRIBUTION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
ULTIMATE DREAM shifted out at the start and bumped WIN FOR CHARITY.
From wide barriers, DASHING DART, HAPPY AND HEALTHY and RED HORSE were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
After initially being steadied from a wide barrier to obtain cover behind runners, ENJOY LIFE was left racing wide and without cover in the early stages. ENJOY LIFE was then allowed to improve after the 1300 Metres to take up a more prominent position after the 1000 Metres.
For a considerable distance approaching and passing the 1300 Metres, DASHING DART proved very difficult to settle, got its head on the side and lay out when being checked away from the heels of ULTIMATE DREAM.
JOLLY GAINS was left racing wide and without cover approaching the 1200 Metres and was consequently allowed to improve its position into the lead approaching the 1000 Metres.
Due to the tempo of the race after the 1200 Metres, MONEY WINNER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WIN FOR CHARITY which was awkwardly placed behind CHARITY WINGS which was steadied to allow JOLLY GAINS to cross.
After the 1000 Metres, LUCKY MASTER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of JOLLY GAINS.
Approaching and passing the 900 Metres, THE JUDGE got its head up when proving difficult to settle and awkwardly placed behind MONEY WINNER.
Passing the 150 Metres, ULTIMATE DREAM was directed out in an attempt to obtain clear running and then near the 100 Metres when unable to shift to the outside of CHARITY WINGS due to WIN FOR CHARITY being positioned to its outside. ULTIMATE DREAM was then shifted back to the inside of CHARITY WINGS in an attempt to obtain clear running.
Over the concluding stages, ULTIMATE DREAM was unable to obtain clear running when awkwardly placed behind ENJOY LIFE. Because of this, ULTIMATE DREAM was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
When questioned, S Clipperton stated that he was instructed to ride WIN FOR CHARITY with cover if possible as the horse had performed well two starts ago when successful after being able to race with cover behind another runner. He said it was hoped that WIN FOR CHARITY would be able to race in about 4th or 5th position behind the leaders. He said in accordance with his instructions he ensured that WIN FOR CHARITY was able to obtain a forward position in the early stages and the horse was able to race up with the leaders passing the winning post on the first occasion. He said when CHARITY WINGS improved around WIN FOR CHARITY after passing the winning post on the first occasion, he steadied his mount to allow that horse to cross WIN FOR CHARITY so that he could obtain a trailing position behind that horse. He said when he was steadying to allow CHARITY WINGS to cross, WIN FOR CHARITY commenced to travel keenly approaching and passing the 1200 Metres, however, when firstly JOLLY GAINS and then ENJOY LIFE improved around the field, he anticipated that this would result in a more genuine tempo which would allow WIN FOR CHARITY to settle better. He added as those horses improved their positions passing the 1100 Metres, WIN FOR CHARITY commenced to travel more kindly behind CHARITY WINGS. He said however that after the 1000 Metres CHARITY WINGS was steadied to allow ENJOY LIFE to cross which resulted in WIN FOR CHARITY ravelling keenly behind CHARITY WINGS. He said when THE JUDGE improved quickly to the outside of WIN FOR CHARITY near the 600 Metres, he shifted his mount away from the heels of CHARITY WINGS to ensure that he was not left flat-footed. He said WIN FOR CHARITY did not show the same turn of foot as THE JUDGE and then in the Straight finished off the race only fairly. Mr K W Lui, the trainer of WIN FOR CHARITY, confirmed the instructions. He said after the horse was successful two starts ago when ridden with cover and then weakened over the concluding stages at its most recent start after leading, C Y Ho, who had ridden the horse on both occasions, recommended to him that WIN FOR CHARITY be ridden with cover wherever possible as the horse closes off with more purpose when ridden in this manner. He said for this reason he had instructed Jockey Clipperton to obtain cover and he expected that LUCKY MASTER and MONEY WINNER would lead the race which would provide WIN FOR CHARITY the opportunity to obtain a trailing position behind those horses. He said due to the circumstances of the race, WIN FOR CHARITY raced further back in the field than had been hoped, however, he believed that this was as a result of the slow tempo of the race, resulting in a number of runners improving their positions rather than Jockey Clipperton not riding the horse as instructed. Having regard to Mr Lui’s explanation, no further action was taken.
THE JUDGE and ENJOY LIFE were sent for sampling.
