Racing Incident Report

SUPER GAIN missed the start slightly. On jumping, NATURAL CLASSIC knuckled and almost fell, then was obliged to race wide and without any cover. For some distance rounding the Home Turn, SPEEDY FORWARD was held up between CROWN REGENT and FAIR COMMENT. About the 400 Metres, SUPER GAIN was steadied and shifted in to avoid FAIR COMMENT. Throughout the race, HURRAY hung in and over the concluding stages dropped right out. The performance was considered unacceptable. Before HURRAY can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subject to an official veterinary examination. When asked about the disappointing performance of CHAMPION RANGER, F Coetzee said he has not ridden the horse even in its work, but was told by its Trainer, Mr Kan, before the race that the horse was expected to run well and its work has been satisfactorily. He said he noted the horse was very sweaty in the parade. He discussed this with Mr Kan, but was assured it was not unusual for this horse. He said the horse went to the barriers satisfactorily, but after being boxed was not standing properly and was clearly not ready to jump. Accordingly he called for an attendant, with this assistance the horse was straightened up, but he could still feel it was tense underneath him and when the gates opened CHAMPION RANGER missed the start badly. He said he had been instructed to lead or if someone went quick in front, he was to ride the horse behind the lead. Accordingly he rode CHAMPION RANGER hard in the early stages to go forward, but CHAMPION RANGER did not respond, he continued to push the horse along in the Back Straight with little success, but he said over the concluding CHAMPION RANGER did pass a few well beaten runners. The performance of CHAMPION RANGER was considered by the Stewards to be unacceptable and before the horse will be allowed to race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subject to an official veterinary examination. CHAMPION RANGER was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, it was reported that SO GREAT had bled from both nostrils. Following the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that HURRAY had lost its near side front plate.
