Racing Incident Report
On jumping, OPTIC CHIEF shifted in abruptly and bumped HOLY QUEST. SPARTAN missed the start slightly and brushed the hindquarters of BELOVED PARTNER and near the winning post the first time was steadied to avoid the heels of DARLEY. Turning out of the Straight the first time, CLASSIC CHOICE, which had a tendency to be pulling, got its head up. For a short distance on the latter part of the Home Turn, SPARTAN was held up behind OPTIC CHIEF which was giving ground. To obtain running and go forward, SPARTAN was shifted in abruptly. D Whyte (VIKING DANCER) said he has ridden the horse in some work of recent times and this work in his opinion was encouraging. He went on to explain the initial intention had been to ride the horse somewhere just off the pace, however, after discussions with the trainer before the race it was decided because of the foreseen lack of pace in the race VIKING DANCER should be ridden more forward than usual, but if possible he was to find cover. He said in the early stages he endeavoured to allow HOLY QUEST to cross and lead him which would provide him with cover, but when that horse did not continue forward, he felt it was in the best interests of VIKING DANCER to allow the horse to run along in front.
