Racing Incident Report

E Saint-Martin (CHARMING STRIDE) was fined $2,000 for failing to declare 2 lbs overweight at the time of declaration [Rule 82(3)]. ORLANDO FLYER jumped very awkwardly with its head up, then made the turn at the 800 Metres awkwardly again with its head up, shifted out and caused some inconvenience to CHEVAL D'OR. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, NANNING TREASURE hung out. Rounding the Home Turn, CHARMING STRIDE, which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MASTER MARAUDER, hung out. On straightening, CHUK WAY was steadied when disappointed for running between CHEVAL D'OR and CHEERS UP which was taken out slightly by ORLANDO FLYER. Near the 200 Metres, CHARMING STRIDE was bumped by ZINEDINE which was hanging in away from EXPLOSIVE POWER. When questioned, S Baster (LOK WAH TREASURE) explained the horse had been trialing only fairly and obviously has much to learn. He said the intention today was to try and ensure LOK WAH TREASURE was settled in the early stages and find a position amongst other runners. He pointed out LOK WAH TREASURE jumped reasonably, but was inconvenienced slightly by EXPLOSIVE POWER which shifted in and then travelled at the tail of the field. He said running towards the 600 Metres he realised he was a long way back and travelling well, but he was placed inside CHUK WAY and was not able to improve. He said to have gone forward would have meant steadying, coming behind CHUK WAY and then to its outside to find running, but in the circumstances he elected not to do this. He said on straightening there might have been an opportunity for him to go forward inside THE RICH MAN, but he wanted to ensure he had an uninterrupted run before putting LOK WAH TREASURE under full pressure as the horse still was inclined to race greenly. He pointed out although the horse finished the race off strongly, when in the clear and put under pressure it still did have a tendency to get its head up and not stretched as it should. S Baster acknowledged it would have been better had he improved in the race sooner than he did today. In the circumstances, the Stewards accepted the explanations he put forward, but he was told at vital stages his riding had come under notice. MILLENNIUM SPIRIT was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
