Racing Incident Report

On jumping, WONDERFUL LIFE, which was being steadied to take up a position towards the rear, threw its head about. W Woods (NICE AND EASY) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that he allowed his mount to shift in near the 1400 Metres when not clear of ORLANDO FLYER. As a result of this, ORLANDO FLYER was carried across the running of VIPER CORP, this caused VIPER CORP to strike the running rail and be checked severely. After considering all the circumstances of this case, it was decided the appropriate penalty was that W Woods be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 12 May 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Wednesday 1 May 2002. Apprentice S K Sit (MANY HAPPY RETURNS) said from an outside gate his instructions had been to jump cleanly, but then immediately take hold of the horse, find cover and take up a position towards the rear. He said on leaving the gates MANY HAPPY RETURNS commenced to pull, in his opinion he did his very best to carry out the instructions, but he was unable to settle MANY HAPPY RETURNS. He was caught wide throughout, was not able to find any cover and raced in a much further forward position than had been the intention and as a consequence over the concluding stages MANY HAPPY RETURNS dropped out. The explanations submitted by Apprentice S K Sit were accepted. When questioned, C Williams (ORLANDO FLYER) said before the race the stable considered there might not have been a lot of pace on and in recent runs ORLANDO FLYER had been ridden well back. Because of this lack of pace, it was considered the horse should be ridden about 4th or 5th position if possible. He said ORLANDO FLYER missed the start only slightly, then in an endeavour to carry out the instructions, he gave the horse a dig to put it on the bit and take up a forward position. He said ORLANDO FLYER then raced much keener than he anticipated it would and because of the lack of pace he felt it was in the best interests of ORLANDO FLYER in the circumstances of this race to allow it to run along in front. He said near the 800 Metres the horse was racing awkwardly with its head up and in an endeavour to settle it, he allowed it to momentarily stride forward, then re-gathered ORLANDO FLYER and shifted back onto the rail. In the circumstances, the explanations were accepted. A Marcus (MULTIZEN) was unable to offer any real explanation for the poor run. He said the horse was giving ground a long way out, he pulled the whip shortly after the 1000 Metres, but over the concluding stages MULTIZEN dropped right out of the race. Before being allowed to race again, MULTIZEN will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. MULTIZEN and WONDERFUL LIFE were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, Mr K L Man, trainer of VIPER CORP, asked an endoscopic examination be performed on the horse. The Veterinary Surgeon said this revealed a moderate amount of blood in the trachea and over the larynx, but in his opinion the horse should not be deemed to be an official bleeder.
