Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, the Veterinary Surgeon noted PRIDE AND FORTUNE had a wound to the upper part of its gum. He examined the horse and after the necessary consultations said PRIDE AND FORTUNE was suitable to race. On jumping, RECOGNITION was steadied and took up a position towards the rear. After the 400 Metres, KINGDOM OF GOLD and BORN SMART came together as KINGDOM OF GOLD endeavoured to shift out and go forward. Apprentice K K Lai (PRIDE AND FORTUNE) said he was unable to settle the horse rounding the turn, it got beyond his control and ran off. The performance of PRIDE AND FORTUNE was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend. F Coetzee (KINGDOM OF GOLD) said he viewed the videos of the horse's runs and before the race he did think he would have been asked to ride it somewhere towards the rear. He said however he was told by the trainer before the race the horse was more or less one paced and if he thought it would settle, he would have asked him to lead. F Coetzee said the horse left the gates well enough, he allowed it to relax and took up what he thought was an ideal position with cover and KINGDOM OF GOLD travelled well enough during the race, but in the Straight when he endeavoured to improve inside BORN SMART, KINGDOM OF GOLD did not respond as thought it should and was somewhat disappointing. G Mossé (SECOND OPINION) said the horse was having its first run from a short break today. He said he had worked SECOND OPINION last Thursday, this work he thought was good and it was anticipated the horse would run well today. He said SECOND OPINION travelled well enough in the run, but hung out badly and although the horse had hung before, today was worse than it should be. He said at about the last 100 Metres when SECOND OPINION was well beaten and was continuing to hang out, he thought something may have been wrong with it and he did not ride it to the finish as he normally would. SECOND OPINION was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
