Racing Incident Report

SUPER COMBED was withdrawn on 25.3.03 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter DRAGON WIN (G Schofield). Before SUPER COMBED can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. When the gates opened, LATTE, which had been leaning against the right hand side of its stall, began awkwardly, shifted out abruptly, bumped the outside gate of its stall, then bumped FANTASTIC WIN which as a result lost ground. HAPPY CHAMP began awkwardly and lost ground. In the early stages, despite being ridden hard, SEA PEARL failed to muster pace. Near the 1400 Metres, HAPPY CHAMP and DIVINE FEELING were checked when crowded for room between CHERISHED and DASH FOR VICTORIES (B Prebble) which got its head on the side and shifted in away from SEA PEARL which itself was shifting in. Whilst the Stewards accepted B Prebble had made some effort to prevent his mount shifting ground, they reprimanded him and advised him in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to protect his fellow riders. Near the 800 Metres, DASH FOR VICTORIES got its head on the side, shifted in slightly and caused some inconvenience to CHERISHED. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, CRYSTAL STEEL got its head up when awkwardly placed inside the heels of LATTE. Making the Home Turn and for some distance after straightening, CHERISHED was held up and unable to obtain clear running. To obtain clear running after the 300 Metres, CHERISHED was steadied and shifted out for a considerable distance. In the early part of the Straight, GIDDY KIPPER was held up for running and after the 400 Metres was steadied when disappointed for running between CHIU CHOW HERO which was giving ground and MASTER MARAUDER. The performance of CHIU CHOW HERO, which tailed out after having led, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, CHIU CHOW HERO will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. S Dye (LATTE) explained after beginning awkwardly, shifting out and bumping FANTASTIC WIN, his mount got further back than was intended. Y T Cheng (TORI TOP) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a midfield position as is usual. He said tonight TORI TOP began well and immediately travelled into the bridle, however, in view of his riding instructions, he elected to steady his mount and take up a position around midfield rather than allow it to continue forward. HAPPY CHAMP was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of HAPPY CHAMP after the race did not reveal any abnormalities. CHERISHED was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, CHERISHED was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. GIDDY KIPPER, FANTASTIC WIN and DIVINE FEELING were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 27 Mar. 2003) :
Following the race, HAPPY CHAMP was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. HAPPY CHAMP was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer K W Lui this morning and was noted to be lame on the left fore leg.
Before racing again, HAPPY CHAMP will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
