Racing Incident Report

MEDIT KING began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped KING OF SPADES. PERFECT GALLANT began awkwardly and got its head up. On jumping, GOOD WIN shifted out and caused crowding on its outside to LA MERVEILLE and SPIRITUAL KING which became unbalanced, shifted out and bumped KING ERIE. MONEY WINS was slow to begin. After the 900 Metres, LA MERVEILLE, which was laying in, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of KING OF SPADES. For some distance after the 600 Metres, KING OF SPADES was tight inside the heels of SPIRITUAL KING which was giving ground. On straightening, MEDIT KING was hit over the head by the whip of S Dye (SIGHT FIRST). In the early part of the Straight, LA MERVEILLE hung in. For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT was unable to obtain clear running behind LUCKY ENCOUNTER and KING ERIE. When being steadied and shifted to the outside of KING ERIE in an effort to find clear running, PERFECT GALLANT was struck over the head by the whip of K C Tsang (LEAD TO WIN). For some distance after the 200 Meters, LEAD TO WIN was held up and unable to obtain clear running when behind LUCKY ENCOUNTER and KING ERIE. Throughout the race, SAMMY TREASURE raced wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. When questioned regarding the improved performance of MONEY WINS, Trainer D Cruz said tonight's performance was a complete surprise to him and the horse was not fancied by the stable. He said MONEY WINS' work had been consistent during this preparation and had not shown any significant improvement in recent times. He said he felt tonight's surface would be too firm for the horse, however, he pointed out at its two most recent starts MONEY WINS had been ridden by apprentices and tonight had the services of a senior jockey, J Quinn. He said leading up to tonight's race he had suggested to the owners of MONEY WINS that due to the horse's loss of form and the fact it is now 8 years old that they may consider retiring the horse following tonight's race. The Stewards accepted the explanations of Mr Cruz. SPIRITUAL KING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SPIRITUAL KING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. GOOD WIN, MONEY WINS and KING OF SPADES were sent for sampling.
