Racing Incident Report
INSIDE MAIL was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was checked away from the heels of COMPANION which shifted out. GOLDEN FARM was slow to begin. At the 500 Metres, GRANDWAY SHUTTLE was crowded for room inside HEKYLL N' JYDE which got its head on the side and shifted in momentarily. At the 250 Metres, GOLDEN FARM was shifted to the inside of DOWN FOR THE COUNT to obtain clear running. Near the 200 Metres, EVER MORE, which was endeavouring to improve into a tight run between HIGHLILLI and COMPANION, was severely checked after being bumped by HIGHLILLI and shifting in to be on the heels of COMPANION which at that time shifted out slightly. Although the check was one of some significance, in the circumstances no action was taken. S Dye said he had been instructed by Trainer J Size to make sure he had HEKYLL N' JYDE well-balanced and he should ensure the horse settled and travelled in a manner to allow it to finish off strongly in what was anticipated to be a quickly run race. He said HEKYLL N' JYDE had raced at Happy Valley on two previous occasions and despite having won one of these races the horse was not properly balanced making the turns. He said with these riding instructions firmly in mind, he elected not to ride forward passing the 800 Metres in an attempt to hold EVER MORE out but rather allow that horse to cross him and follow it in the run. He said by doing this he hoped HEKYLL N' JYDE would be balanced, however, making the turn the horse still got its head on the side and hung in. He said at the 400 Metres he shifted to a position on the rail and immediately commenced to ride HEKYLL N' JYDE along hands and heels, then shortly after straightening pulled the whip and rode the horse hard and it did close the race off strongly. As Mr J Size, the trainer of HEKYLL N' JYDE, had left the course, the Stewards will seek to confirm the riding instructions with him at the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 10 January 2004. HIGHLILLI, ARABIAN WAGER and DOWN FOR THE COUNT were sent for sampling.
