Racing Incident Report
ROMANTIC SYMPHONY was slow to begin. ENGINEERING WONDER began awkwardly. When the gates opened, CENDAMY began very awkwardly, got its head up, shifted out and made contact with BEAUTY PLUS which as a result became unbalanced. In this incident, the head of CENDAMY came into contact with the right shoulder of D Whyte, the rider of BEAUTY PLUS. On jumping, ABLE EAGLE stumbled. Near the 700 Metres, ROMANTIC SYMPHONY got its head up and lost ground when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SIGHT CHAMPION. Near the 200 Metres, ATHLETIC GOLD was bumped by GRANDWAY SHUTTLE which shifted in. Also near the 200 Metres, BEAUTY PLUS and EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT bumped. For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, ENGINEERING WONDER had difficulty obtaining clear running. After the 100 Metres, CENDAMY was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running between ABLE EAGLE and ROMANTIC SYMPHONY which shifted out. Over the concluding stages, SUGAR AND SWEET raced tight inside LIGHTNING BOLT which was hanging in and proving difficult to ride. Because of this, neither SUGAR AND SWEET nor LIGHTNING BOLT was ridden out to the line as they normally would be. Near the winning post, ABLE EAGLE was checked when crowded for room between ATHLETIC GOLD which shifted in slightly and ROMANTIC SYMPHONY which when having difficulty obtaining running was shifted to the outside of LIGHTNING BOLT. Throughout the race, SUPREME STAR raced wide and without cover, approaching the 600 Metres hung in and then in the Straight gave ground. A Marcus (SIGHT CHAMPION) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position. He said SIGHT CHAMPION began only fairly from a gate towards the outside, GRANDWAY SHUTTLE and LIGHTNING BOLT which had drawn to his inside were immediately hard ridden to go forward, he therefore shortly after the start elected to steady and come back to follow these horses. He said he rode SIGHT CHAMPION along and slapped it down the shoulder with the whip, however, it soon became apparent to him that he would be obliged to race outside BEAUTY PLUS, therefore near the 1000 Metres elected to come back further and shift in behind BEAUTY PLUS to obtain cover and consequently got much further back than he had been instructed to do so. He was adamant it was in the best interest of the horse as if he had continued to race in a forward position, he would have been racing wide without cover in a similar position to SUPREME STAR. He said in the Straight SIGHT CHAMPION responded only fairly to his riding. The Stewards considered the explanation of A Marcus for racing back tonight to be acceptable. GRANDWAY SHUTTLE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, GRANDWAY SHUTTLE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT, ENGINEERING WONDER and ATHLETIC GOLD were sent for sampling.
