Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, ETERNAL FUN got its head up and bounded in the air. SAMMY TREASURE began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of STRAIGHT WIN. As a consequence of this, SAMMY TREASURE lost ground. WINMARK and SUPRA SMART KID were slow to begin. ELEGANCE began awkwardly, shortly afterwards shifted in and bumped RECOGNITION which in turn shifted ground and bumped SUPRA SMART KID. With the intention to be ridden in a rearward position from the outside gate, WATCHMAN was immediately steadied on jumping and taken across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. In the early stages, RECOGNITION hung in and near the 1200 Metres was steadied away from the heels of MR PRESIDENT. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, STRAIGHT WIN was awkwardly placed inside the heels of ELVIS. At the 700 Metres, SUPRA SMART KID lay in and made contact with the running rail. For a considerable distance after the 400 Metres, SAMMY TREASURE was held up and unable to obtain clear running. At the 300 Metres, WATCHMAN was momentarily steadied away from the heels of MILLENNIUM DAWN which shifted out. Near the 200 Metres, when improving into a narrow run between ELVIS and ETERNAL FUN, NOBLE ZOOM made contact with both horses. Over about the final 200 Metres, SUPRA SMART KID had difficulty obtaining clear running between ETERNAL FUN and ELEGANCE, both of which were giving ground. Because of this, SUPRA SMART KID was not ridden out as it normally would be. Throughout the race, ELEGANCE raced wide and without cover. F Coetzee (ETERNAL FUN) said he had been instructed to try and make the horse begin cleanly and allow it to travel where it was comfortable and he anticipated this would be in a rearward position. He said ETERNAL FUN began best, he immediately started looking to his inside in the hope of being able to find a position with cover, however, he was not able to do so, he therefore decided after the 1200 Metres to ride along for a short distance to clear MR PRESIDENT and shift across to be racing in a three wide position outside the leaders without cover. He said in his opinion it would not have been in the best interest of ETERNAL FUN to have further steadied his mount in the early stages to go back to find cover and therefore he rode the horse further forward than had been intended. The explanation of F Coetzee was accepted. NOBLE ZOOM and GREAT DRAGON were sent for sampling.
