Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, PRETTY DOUBLE bounded in the air and began awkwardly. On jumping, PEARL AND GOLD and ACME OF SURPRISE bumped. LA MERVEILLE and WATCHMAN began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. Shortly after the start, TELECOM BABE was bumped by PEARL AND GOLD. Near the winning post the first time, TIME OF RED WINE raced tight inside PRETTY DOUBLE. Near the 1000 Metres, WATCHMAN shifted in and bumped the running rail. In the middle sages, ACME OF SURPRISE raced ungenerously, got its head on the side and shifted in away from PRETTY DOUBLE when racing tight inside that horse which momentarily shifted in. After this, ACME OF SURPRISE was inclined to lay in and making the turn near the 600 Metres caused some crowding to KASHMAC. At the 500 Metres, KASHMAC was steadied away from the heels of FREE WAY which itself steadied away from the heels of HOT PRACTITIONER. Near the 200 Metres when struck with the whip, HOT PRACTITIONER shifted out. Near the 100 Metres, KASHMAC was crowded for room between ELEGANCE which shifted out slightly and LA MERVEILLE which shifted in slightly. In the Straight, LA MERVEILLE hung in badly and proved difficult to ride. When questioned, S K Sit (TIME OF RED WINE) said he had been issued specific instructions that he should do his utmost to lead on the horse. He said the trainer had explained to him previously the horse in its races had started to give ground from the 600 Metres. He said TIME OF RED WINE began only fairly, he then rode along approaching the winning post on the first occasion in an attempt to obtain the lead. He said after passing the winning post the first time despite having the option of racing to the outside of ACME OF SURPRISE, he continued forward to race three wide outside the lead. He said because of the specific instructions he had been issued, he continued to ride TIME OF RED WINE along, however, the horse did not show the necessary speed to cross runners to its inside and shift to the fence. He said after the 800 Metres ELEGANCE which had been racing to his inside did not persevere and this enabled him to shift to a two wide position outside HOT PRACTITIONER, however, shortly afterwards TIME OF RED WINE commenced to give ground. Trainer P F Yiu confirmed the instructions issued to S K Sit and said in addition to the instructions already explained he had told S K Sit he should do whatever was necessary to try and obtain a position on the fence. Mr Yiu conceded maybe S K Sit had overdone the instructions. The Stewards severely reprimanded S K Sit and told him in their opinion his riding lacked both the judgement and the initiative expected of a senior rider in Hong Kong and on this occasion he had overdone the riding instructions he had been issued. The performance of TIME OF RED WINE, which finished distanced, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, TIME OF RED WINE will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HOT PRACTITIONER and WATCHMAN were sent for sampling.
