Racing Incident Report

Prior to being presented in the Parade Ring, BODACIOUS had its right front plate refitted. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race. BODACIOUS began awkwardly, got its head up and lost ground. ONLY YOU was slow to begin. Near the 1200 Metres, SHINING GEM and OPERATION HUMOUR became unbalanced after being bumped by OPTIC CHIEF which was carried in by ISLAND SPIRIT which in turn was carried in by PORTER RICKS (Y Lerner) which shifted ground when not properly clear. Y Lerner was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Prior to the 1000 Metres, OPERATION HUMOUR got its head up when awkwardly placed between the heels of OPERA MAGIC and ISLAND SPIRIT. At the 1000 Metres, BODACIOUS got its head up when awkwardly placed inside the heels of ONLY YOU. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, CHECK MATE was steadied away from the heels of OPTIC CHIEF. At the 700 Metres, BODACIOUS and SHINING GEM bumped. In the early part of the Straight, OPERA MAGIC was held up and unable to obtain clear running between STAR OF NORTHERN and PORTER RICKS. Near the 350 Metres, OPERA MAGIC was steadied and shifted out to obtain clear running. Near the 200 Metres, BODACIOUS, which was beginning to close the race off, was shifted to the outside of STAR OF NORTHERN to obtain clear running. After this, BODACIOUS hung out and as a result B Doyle, its rider, changed the whip into his left hand. In the Straight, ISLAND SPIRIT shifted ground on several occasions when under pressure. Throughout the race, GLORIOUS LIGHT raced wide and without cover. S Dye (SILLY BOY) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in 3rd or 4th position if possible and preferably away from the running rail. He said when the gates opened SILLY BOY bounded in the air, as a result lost ground and was immediately crossed by STAR OF NORTHERN which had drawn to his outside. He said in the past SILLY BOY had proved difficult to settle when ridden along in the early stages, he therefore decided against riding SILLY BOY along in an attempt to hold CHECK MATE out on his outside, but instead decided to further steady his mount to ensure it travelled comfortably and would be able to close the race off. He said if he had ridden along in the early stages, he was concerned that SILLY BOY would have found itself over-racing in a steadily run race and therefore in an awkward position which would have been detrimental to the horse's chances. The explanation of S Dye was reported. OPERATION HUMOUR was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, OPERATION HUMOUR was examined by the Veterinary Officer.  He said the horse had a breathing obstruction and also was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, OPERATION HUMOUR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SILLY BOY, PORTER RICKS and ISLAND SPIRIT were sent for sampling.
