Racing Incident Report

On jumping, MERIDIAN STAR was crowded for room between LUCKY GOOD DAY which shifted out and BLUE STITCH which was carried in by HO CHOI which on jumping shifted ground. Also on jumping, STAY YOUNG and GEM OF INDIA were hampered and carried wider by SUPER KID which shifted out. GREEN CHANNEL was slow to begin. At the 1200 Metres, PALETTE NATURAL became unbalanced when crowded for room inside LUCKY GOOD DAY which got its head on the side and shifted in away from STAY YOUNG which itself shifted in momentarily. At the 800 Metres, PALETTE NATURAL was again momentarily crowded for room inside LUCKY GOOD DAY which got its head up and shifted in away from STAY YOUNG. At the 300 Metres, GEM OF INDIA, which was hanging in when racing tight between STAY YOUNG and SUPER KID, was steadied. Over about the last 300 Metres, SUPER KID hung in. When questioned regarding his riding after the 800 Metres, W M Lai (FIREBOLT) explained after crossing to the fence early in the race, he was aware SELF FLIT was following him. He said near the 700 Metres he looked down, however, he submitted he was not looking between his legs to see which horse was following him at that stage. He said after this FIREBOLT which was travelling comfortably drifted away from the rail and he elected to allow the horse to remain racing in that position as in his opinion the manner in which the horse was travelling indicated to him that it would kick strongly on straightening and he was not concerned another runner had the opportunity of improving on his inside. W M Lai was told his riding in the middle stages had come under notice and was of great concern to the Stewards. He was also told at all times he must ride in a competitive manner and hold favourable positions wherever possible. He was severely reprimanded and advised in slightly different circumstances he could be in breach of a significant rule for allowing his mount to shift away from the rail in the manner in which he did. Further he was severely reprimanded for the evidence he tendered during the course of the inquiry and told the Stewards were satisfied when he looked down near the 700 Metres he was indeed looking between his legs. GEM OF INDIA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, GEM OF INDIA was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant abnormalities. GREEN CHANNEL, which tailed out, was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, GREEN CHANNEL was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was displaying a heart irregularity. Before being permitted to race again, GREEN CHANNEL will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FIGURES and SUPER KID were sent for sampling.
