Racing Incident Report

HANDBAG PREMIER was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped CAPABEL. As a result of this, Apprentice C K Tong, its rider, lost the use of his left stirrup for some distance. GOLDEN SUPREME was slow to begin, shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between OPERA MAGIC and COURAGEOUSHEART which on jumping shifted out abruptly away from JUST VICTORY which also shifted out. Shortly after this, COURAGEOUSHEART bumped OPERA MAGIC, became unbalanced and lost ground, then was reluctant to stride out for some distance. LOK WAH SUCCESS was slow to begin. In the early stages, JUST VICTORY raced three wide and without cover. For some distance approaching and passing the 1200 Metres, CAPABEL was steadied away from the heels of CHARIOT OF WEI HAI. Passing the 200 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER was hampered when improving into a narrow run between TELECOM TYCOON and CAPABEL. In this incident, CAPABEL was bumped on several occasions and became unbalanced. Also passing the 200 Metres, LOK WAH SUCCESS was steadied and shifted out when unable to obtain clear running on the inside of ON SHAN EXPRESS. Over the final 50 Metres, CAPABEL was awkwardly placed inside the heels of HANDBAG PREMIER. Because of this, CAPABEL was not ridden out in the manner in which it usually would be. D Dunn (CHARIOT OF WEI HAI) said he had discussed the manner in which the horse should be ridden with Mr A T Millard, the trainer, prior to the race. He said it appeared the pattern of today's racing did not suit horses leading, it was therefore decided that in the early stages he should go forward, cross to the lead and then if possible "hand up" if a runner were to improve around his outside. He said he rode in accordance with those instructions and when ON SHAN EXPRESS improved around him near the 1200 Metres, he was happy to let that horse press forward to lead. He said in his opinion the pace of the race was fair and on straightening after having enjoyed a good run he thought his mount would figure in the finish, however, it had failed to close off as was expected. He said when he had been questioned following CHARIOT OF WEI HAI's last start failure he had submitted the horse was not suited racing inside other runners, however, today CHARIOT OF WEI HAI travelled comfortably and appeared at ease racing in this manner. Mr Millard confirmed the riding instructions and said he was most satisfied with the manner in which CHARIOT OF WEI HAI had been ridden. Following the race, CHARIOT OF WEI HAI was examined by the Veterinary Officer at the request of the trainer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, CHARIOT OF WEI HAI will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TELECOM TYCOON was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, TELECOM TYCOON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TELECOM TYCOON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HANDBAG PREMIER, LUCKY DICE and LOK WAH SUCCESS were sent for sampling.
