Racing Incident Report

On jumping, GLORIOUS RHYTHM was checked when crowded for room between KNIGHT TEMPLAR and SUNNY DESERT which shifted in abruptly. ALAKAZAM was slow to begin. After the 1600 Metres, SUNNY DESERT was steadied to shift across behind runners to a position closer to the rail. Making the Home Turn, BEST EVER hung out. Near the 200 Metres, SUNNY DESERT was steadied when disappointed for running between JUBILOSO and ELFHELM which was carried in by ALAKAZAM which at this time shifted in when hanging. Over the concluding stages, RED BARON raced tight inside GLORIOUS RHYTHM. Because of this, RED BARON was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. C Williams (RED BARON) said he had been instructed to ride the horse which had drawn the outside barrier positively from the start and he was to do his utmost to avoid being caught wide and without cover along the Back Straight. He said RED BARON began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall which caused his knee to also make contact with the barriers. He said as a result of this he was in some discomfort in the early stages of the race. He said he rode RED BARON along, however, the horse seemed reluctant to stride out and approaching the winning post the first time he slapped RED BARON down the shoulder in an endeavour to get it to race more truly. He said making the first turn he was wide on the course, however, after the 1200 Metres when GLORIOUS RHYTHM and KNIGHT TEMPLAR went forward, he was able to shift across to be in a three wide position outside SWEETIE, however, he did not have cover. He said he was concerned that he did not have cover because of the instructions he was issued, but there was no opportunity for him to shift in. He said therefore after the 900 Metres as RED BARON was travelling well within itself, he elected to allow the horse to roll forward in the hope that he would be able to obtain a more favourable position. He said initially RED BARON travelled forward easily, however, near the 700 Metres after obtaining a position of a half length advantage on the outside of GLORIOUS RHYTHM, RED BARON appeared reluctant to continue on. He said he therefore elected to ride the horse along, clear that runner and shift closer to the rail. He said whilst it was contrary to the manner in which he had been asked to ride RED BARON, he believed in the circumstances this would be better than remaining racing three wide. He said in the Straight RED BARON was inconvenienced by GLORIOUS RHYTHM which drifted in, however, still kept on fairly. Mr D E Ferraris, trainer of RED BARON, said he had intended to have the horse ridden with cover, however, if the pace was not strong and without having to do too much work it would be acceptable for RED BARON to go forward and even lead. He said he was disappointed RED BARON did not obtain cover in the early stages and then was ridden to go forward at the 600 Metres. C Williams was told his explanation would be reported. HAPPY TOGETHER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, HAPPY TOGETHER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPY TOGETHER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SOCRATES and SWEETIE were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported GLORIOUS RHYTHM had sustained a laceration to the right hind heel.
