Racing Incident Report
MR GENKI, which had drawn the outside gate and was intended to be ridden quietly, was fractious after being boxed and missed the start. HEALTHY HEART bounded in the air at the start and lost ground, then shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of ROYAL VICTORY. WIN FOR ABALONE was little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between FORTUNE MAPLE which itself was crowded for room inside STORMY RUNNER and SPOKESMAN which on jumping shifted out. Near the 700 Metres, HEALTHY HEART was momentarily steadied away from the heels of FORTUNE MAPLE which when barely clear shifted to a position behind ROYAL VICTORY. Also near the 700 Metres, BACK SEAT DRIVER became unbalanced when close to the heels of SPOKESMAN. In the middle stages, ARIGATO proved difficult to settle. After the 400 Metres, ARIGATO had difficulty obtaining clear running between FORTUNE MAPLE and ROYAL VICTORY which at this time was carried out slightly by SPOKESMAN which became unbalanced and shifted ground. Prior to the winning post, FORTUNE MAPLE, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of ARIGATO which shifted out. S Dye (SPOKESMAN) said as usual he had been instructed to ride the horse where it was comfortable racing. He said in its prior runs this season the horse had been very much "on the toe" prior to the start, had not been beginning well and consequently got back in the field. He did point out the most recent start was over 1000 Metres at Happy Valley which was run at a much quicker tempo than that of today's race. He said today SPOKESMAN appeared far more settled prior to the race, began well and without being ridden along travelled into a forward position. He did say approaching the turn at the 800 Metres he allowed SPOKESMAN to continue on further forward to clear ROYAL VICTORY and BACK SEAT DRIVER which were racing to his inside so as he was not to be racing wide and without cover. He said when SPOKESMAN begins its races well, the intention will be to have the horse in a forward position. The explanation submitted by S Dye was accepted. PRESENT TREASURE and SPOKESMAN were sent for sampling.
