Racing Incident Report

At declaration time, D Whyte was declared as the rider of both EVEREST and FAIRPLAY. It was established that D Whyte had a firm commitment to ride EVEREST. As such, the Stewards permitted W M Lai to be substituted as the rider of FAIRPLAY. For this declaration error, D Whyte was fined $2,000. After being boxed, HAPPY CONTENDER became fractious and as the start was effected lunged forward. As this happened, Apprentice M W Leung, its rider, reached out with his right hand to take hold of the adjoining partition. As a result, HAPPY CONTENDER began very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly, causing HIGH PRICE and GREAT FORTUNE to be severely checked. AURELIAN was slow to begin. JOIN VICTORY began awkwardly, threw its head about, then shortly afterwards lost further ground when crowded for room between FREEBIRD and EVEREST which was carried out by WATCHMAN which on jumping shifted out abruptly. In the early stages, HIGH PRICE proved difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up when being checked away from the heels of GREAT FORTUNE. Making the turn at the 1200 Metres, FREEBIRD, which was racing without cover, hung out. After entering the Back Straight, HIGH PRICE which shifted to the outside of GREAT FORTUNE was allowed to travel forward. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, HAPPY CONTENDER hung in. At the 500 Metres, FREEBIRD was steadied when awkwardly placed between WATCHMAN and HIGH PRICE. After the 400 Metres, AURELIAN was shifted out away from the heels of FREEBIRD. At the 200 Metres, S Dye (QI'S PET) dropped his right rein which he re-gathered shortly afterwards. FAIRPLAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FAIRPLAY after the race did not show any significant findings. QI'S PET and WATCHMAN were sent for sampling.
