Racing Incident Report

MEDIC LEGION was withdrawn on 8.4.05 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter LUCKY DRAGON (G Mossé). Before being allowed to race again, MEDIC LEGION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOLDEN GALLOPER was slow to begin. On entering the track after having left the Parade Ring, the left stirrup leather on the saddle of M Rodd, the rider of STORMY, broke. The stirrup leather was replaced prior to STORMY proceeding to the Start. M Rodd was fined $3,000 for failing to ensure the condition of his stirrup leather [Rule 93(2)]. Shortly after the start, QUICK NEWS stumbled. Also shortly after the start, LUCKY DRAGON was checked and STORMY and QUICK NEWS crowded for room between BRAVERY LUCK which shifted out slightly and TOP SCORER (B Prebble) which shifted in. Because of the contributing circumstances, it was considered appropriate to issue B Prebble with a reprimand and advise him to exercise more care. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, STORMY was checked to avoid the heels of DARTER which at this time got its head up when racing ungenerously close to the heels of WINNING RONGRONG. QUICK NEWS and LUCKY DRAGON, which were following, were checked in consequence. After this, LUCKY DRAGON raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. Also making the turn at the 800 Metres, WINNING RONGRONG got its head on the side, shifted in and was checked away from the heels of GOLDEN GALLOPER. Shortly after straightening, BRAVERY LUCK got its head on the side, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of LUCKY DRAGON. When questioned regarding the improved performance of LUCKY MONEY, Mr S T Wong, the trainer of the horse, which was having its third race start today, said first up at Happy Valley the horse lacked experience and also in his opinion the race was too short for it. He said at its second race start over the same course and distance of today LUCKY MONEY had drawn favourably and as a consequence raced on the inside. He said on that occasion he had instructed K S Yu, the rider of the horse, to endeavour to have LUCKY MONEY in a forward position, however, the horse was reluctant to travel inside runners and got much further back than was hoped. He said today from the outside barrier the riding instructions were the same as at the horse's previous start. He said today in his opinion LUCKY MONEY showed its appreciation of racing outside runners and this together with the natural improvement Mr Wong believed accounted for the horse's improved performance. Mr Wong did say the win of LUCKY MONEY today was a total surprise to him and he advised the owner who was present accordingly. Mr Wong was told now LUCKY MONEY has established form it would be hoped that the horse will be competitive in its future races. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GOLDEN GALLOPER, O Chavez said he had intended to lead on the horse if possible. He said when TOP SCORER crossed to race in advance of him on his outside, that horse then endeavoured to steady the pace. He said when this occurred GOLDEN GALLOPER was reluctant to hold its position inside TOP SCORER and lost ground. He said after being crossed by TOP SCORER, GOLDEN GALLOPER did not appear comfortable racing amongst horses and was unbalanced in its action. He said making the Home Turn GOLDEN GALLOPER continued to race ungenerously and hung out and whilst being hard ridden in the early part of the Straight kept on only fairly until near the 200 Metres when it commenced to give ground. GOLDEN GALLOPER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN GALLOPER after the race did not show any significant findings. TOP SCORER, LUCK MONEY and PRESENT TREASURE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 11 April 2005)
GOLDEN GALLOPER, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. GOLDEN GALLOPER was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer K W Lui yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the right front leg. Before being permitted to race again, GOLDEN GALLOPER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
