Racing Incident Report

RUSSIAN PEARL was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, THE DUKE was taken across behind runners. In the early stages, SAMBUCA raced wide and without cover. After the 1400 Metres, HIGH INTELLIGENT was steadied away from the heels of WEALTHY which at this time was steadied to allow LUCKSWELL to cross to the fence in the lead. Near the 1000 Metres, due to the slow tempo, BEST GIFT, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up and was checked away from the heels of RIVER DANCER. BEST GIFT continued to race awkwardly close to the heels of RIVER DANCER and near the 900 Metres shifted out, causing RUSSIAN PEARL to be hampered, carried wider, crowded for room between BEST GIFT and TIBER and eventually lose its running. No action was taken. In the middle stages, GREEN TREASURE raced wide and without cover and after the 1000 Metres was allowed to stride forward. Also in the middle stages, BOWMAN'S CROSSING travelled wide and without cover. Making the Home Turn, RIVER DANCER hung out. Rounding the Home Turn, TIBER (E Saint-Martin) and RUSSIAN PEARL (F Coetzee) raced tight due mainly to RUSSIAN PEARL endeavouring to shift out and TIBER endeavouring to hold its line. E Saint-Martin and F Coetzee were told whilst the Stewards appreciate competitive riding, they should at all times ensure that such riding does not lead to contact being made with another rider's body. From the 350 Metres until the 200 Metres, THE DUKE was unable to obtain clear running. At the 350 Metres, BEST GIFT was checked to avoid the heels of RIVER DANCER after shifting out when brushed by BULLISH LUCK. Although the incident was one of some significance, the Stewards believed it was appropriate not to take any action. Approaching the 200 Metres, HIGH INTELLIGENT was held up on the heels of LUCKSWELL which was giving ground. For the majority of the Home Straight, DAVE'S BEST did not obtain clear running and as such was not tested. Y T Cheng (WEALTHY), which was having its first start over 2000 Metres today, said from barrier 4 he had been instructed to find the fence on the horse and then hand up and allow other runners to improve around his outside. He said accordingly he had WEALTHY begin well, shifted across to the fence in the lead and then attempted to steady the tempo to allow runners to improve around his outside. He said it was not until after the 1600 Metres that LUCKSWELL went forward and crossed him. F Coetzee (RUSSIAN PEARL) said the poor performance of the horse was attributable to the slow tempo at which the race was run. He said along the Back Straight RUSSIAN PEARL would not relax and after being inconvenienced near the 900 Metres did not finish the race off. RUSSIAN PEARL was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. GREEN TREASURE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of RUSSIAN PEARL and GREEN TREASURE after the race did not show any significant findings. SUPER KID and BULLISH LUCK were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted RIVER DANCER had abrasions to its right hock and had also lost the right hind plate.
