Racing Incident Report

RAIN IN SPRING was withdrawn on 25.4.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (inappetance) and was replaced by first Standby Declared Starter HONEST TREASURE (F Coetzee). MR BEAUTIFUL was also withdrawn on 25.4.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by second Standby Declared Starter HAPPY CRUSADER (E Saint-Martin). Before being allowed to race again, RAIN IN SPRING and MR BEAUTIFUL will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. KING OF SPADES was slow to begin. HONEST TREASURE, with the intention of being ridden quietly, was shifted across behind runners shortly after the start. In the early stages, QI'S PET was ridden along to go forward, however, travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. The performance of QI'S PET, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, QI'S PET will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On straightening, JOIN VICTORY was steadied and shifted to the inside of GOLD DIGGER to obtain clear running. Approaching the 200 Metres, FAIRPLAY was held up and unable to improve behind THAT'S IT and inside HAPPY CRUSADER. To obtain clear running, FAIRPLAY was steadied and shifted out at the 200 Metres. When questioned regarding the improved performance of HAPPY CRUSADER, Trainer Y S Tsui said the jockey advised him the horse following its most recent start did not handle racing on the All Weather surface and was better suited racing in head gear. He said it was therefore decided to bring HAPPY CRUSADER to Happy Valley, increase the distance of its race to 1650 Metres and race the horse in a visor. He said in his opinion these matters explained the improved performance of HAPPY CRUSADER. When questioned, D Whyte (THAT'S IT) said he had spoken with Mr T W Leung, trainer of the horse, prior to the race, however, he had not been issued firm riding instructions. He said it had been discussed from the outside barrier it would be preferable for the horse to be ridden in a prominent position, however, he should avoid being wide without cover. He said after beginning well he rode THAT'S IT along to obtain a prominent position. He said he had anticipated QI'S PET which had drawn inside him would be one of the leaders, however, when he looked to his inside near the 1500 Metres and saw QI'S PET being ridden along vigorously to go forward, he was aware that horse would not have sufficient speed to cross in front. He said for him to have remained racing outside QI'S PET would have meant he was travelling wide and without cover, he therefore near the 1300 Metres elected to press on and cross to the fence at the 1200 Metres in the lead. He said when he did this THAT'S IT relaxed underneath him although he was aware he had made some use of the horse in the early stages. He said he realized the first sections of the race were run at a quick tempo, however, he believed it was preferable to cross to the lead rather than continue to race wide without cover. Mr Leung confirmed he had discussed the manner in which THAT'S IT should be ridden with D Whyte. He said he was satisfied D Whyte continued on to lead rather than racing wide on the track. He acknowledged that when questioned previously regarding THAT'S IT's racing pattern, he had informed the Stewards THAT'S IT, which was ridden by H K Yim on those occasions, is best suited when ridden with cover. He did say in his opinion H K Yim got slightly too far back on THAT'S IT at its most recent start and after discussing the rider for tonight's race with the owner it was decided to engage D Whyte. Mr Leung and D Whyte were told the evidence submitted by them had been recorded. HAPPY CRUSADER and SUPER CHARGE were sent for sampling.
