Racing Incident Report

GALACTIC TACTIC was slow to begin, then shortly afterwards lost ground when checked off the heels of ALWAYS WELCOME which shifted in. Shortly after the start, REUNION and LUCKY STRAVINSKY bumped. At the 700 Metres, SPEED FIGHTER got its head up when awkwardly placed outside the heels of GAUCHO, then near the 600 Metres again was steadied away from the heels of GAUCHO. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, GAUCHO was bumped by ALWAYS WELCOME which got its head on the side and hung in. At the 100 Metres, GALACTIC TACTIC, which was closing the race off strongly, commenced to shift in. Because of this, Y T Cheng, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. Just prior to the winning post, GAUCHO, which was giving ground, was crowded for room between REUNION and FLYING SPRINTER which at this time was carried in by ALWAYS WELCOME which got its head on the side and shifted away from SPEED FIGHTER. Throughout the race, DIVINE TOUCH travelled wide and without cover. O Doleuze (FLYING SPRINTER) said the intention had been to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position which he expected to be able to obtain without having to ride along to do so. He said the early sections of the race were run at a very fast tempo, however, he was surprised FLYING SPRINTER did not show its usual speed. He said after the 700 Metres he rode FLYING SPRINTER along with the whip in an endeavour to have the horse make ground as it was much further back than anticipated. He said at this time FLYING SPRINTER did not respond to his riding, however, in the Straight when the leaders started to give ground, FLYING SPRINTER closed the race off strongly. When questioned, D Whyte (ALWAYS WELCOME) explained after the 100 Metres his mount was finding no extra when in second position. He said near the 50 Metres he glanced to his outside when he saw SPEED FIGHTER closing the race off strongly. He said immediately SPEED FIGHTER drew alongside ALWAYS WELCOME and his mount commenced to hang in. He said because of this he looked to his inside whilst continuing to ride along hands and heels to ensure he was not causing interference to runners on his inside. D Nikolic (FLYING GENERAL) said it was anticipated his mount would be in the second half of the field and he was instructed to ensure the horse was properly balanced in what was anticipated to be a quickly run race to enable it to close the race off. He said when travelling near the rear at the 600 Metres, FLYING GENERAL was awkwardly placed inside the heels of FLYING SPRINTER. He said because of this FLYING GENERAL lost ground. He said in the Straight he remained racing towards the inside as he was a long way from the leading horses and there was clear running in front of him. He said when the leaders commenced to give ground over the final 200 Metres due to the fast early tempo, FLYING GENERAL commenced to make ground strongly. He said after the 50 Metres when he was not able to obtain clear running, he was obliged to steady his mount and shift to the outside of GAUCHO in an endeavour to find clear running. He said however he was not able to obtain a clear run to the line. FLYING GENERAL was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FLYING GENERAL after the race did not show any significant findings. SPEED FIGHTER and LUCKY STRAVINSKY were sent for sampling.
