Racing Incident Report

W M Lai (HAR HAR CHARMS) was fined a sum of $2,000 for presenting himself late in the Parade Ring. HAPPY TUMBLER was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, EIGHT PLUS NINE, from a wide barrier, was taken across behind runners. Near the 650 Metres, HAPPY TUMBLER was checked when crowded for room inside WELL NOTED which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. MUTUAL FRIENDSHIP, which was following HAPPY TUMBLER, got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse and shifted out. This resulted in FLYING CHINA being checked when disappointed for running between MUTUAL FRIENDSHIP and EIGHT PLUS NINE near the 500 Metres. Also making the turn near the 650 Metres, INDUSTRIAL MARVEL hung in across the heels of MASARYK and bumped EIGHT PLUS NINE which became unbalanced. FLYING CHINA, which was following, was inconvenienced in consequence. Making the turn near the 600 Metres, LONGWAH RISING was steadied away from the heels of HAR HAR CHARMS which shifted in when not quite clear. W M Lai was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground in future. Near the 250 Metres, WELL NOTED was shifted to the inside of HAR HAR CHARMS to improve its position. When questioned, C W Wong stated that he had been instructed to lead on INDUSTRIAL MARVEL if the horse began well, however, if horses drawn to his inside showed superior speed, he should attempt to find cover on the horse. He said INDUSTRIAL MARVEL began well, he rode the horse along in the early stages to take up a forward position, however, LONGWAH RISING maintained its position to his inside and despite him riding INDUSTRIAL MARVEL along, the horse did not show sufficient speed to cross LONGWAH RISING. He said therefore, rather than remain racing wide and without cover to that horse`s outside, he elected to steady INDUSTRIAL MARVEL and attempt to find a position behind LONGWAH RISING. A veterinary inspection of INDUSTRIAL MARVEL after the race did not show any significant findings. MY WHISKY, ST DIDAR and WELL NOTED were sent for sampling.
