Racing Incident Report

JADE CHRISTY shifted in at the start and bumped SHIBALA which became unbalanced. SUPREME HONG KONG began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, WINSOME was inconvenienced by URBAN DANCER which got its head on the side and shifted in. Near the 800 Metres, LIVERPOOL LAD got its head up when racing close to the heels of TEAM WORK. For some distance approaching and passing the 800 Metres, SHANGHAI PIONEER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SHIBALA. Passing the 700 Metres, JOLLY GOOD CHAMP shifted out when over-racing and travelling close to the heels of LIVERPOOL LAD. Passing the 150 Metres, Apprentice K C Ng (SHIBALA) dropped his whip. After the 150 Metres, URBAN DANCER got its head on the side and shifted out. K C Leung, the rider of FULL VALUE, which throughout the race travelled wide and without cover, reported that making the first turn his saddle shifted to the right hand side. He said that he was able to correct the saddle approaching the 600 Metres. As this was the third occasion in recent times that the saddles on horses trained by Mr R Gibson had shifted in races, the Stewards interviewed him regarding this matter. Mr Gibson stated that he had not altered the equipment used on horses trained by him throughout this season and it was only of late that these issues had occurred. He said he will review the equipment he uses on his horses in races to ensure that, wherever possible, the saddles remain in their proper positions. When questioned, A Suborics stated that after discussing the tactics to be adopted on JADE CHRISTY, it was decided to ride the horse more quietly than had previously been the case. He said that there was considerable speed drawn inside of JADE CHRISTY tonight and it was felt that if the horse were to be ridden to obtain a forward position as is usual, the horse may be left racing wide. He said after shifting JADE CHRISTY across to follow the favourite, WINSOME, in the early stages, JADE CHRISTY commenced to over-race passing the 1000 Metres and had to be checked away from the heels of WINSOME for some distance. He said that in the Straight JADE CHRISTY got its head on the side and hung in. After the race, B Prebble reported that WINSOME, which was backing up after running at last Wednesday’s Happy Valley racemeeting, did not travel as strongly as it had previously in its races and, in his opinion, may not have backed up in tonight’s race. He said WINSOME raced tonight like a horse which is looking for further ground. A veterinary inspection of WINSOME after the race did not show any significant findings. WINSOME, SHIBALA and URBAN DANCER were sent for sampling.
