Racing Incident Report

GOLDEN SCALPEL was withdrawn on 25.1.14 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter FOLLOW THE WIND (W M Lai). Before being allowed to race again, GOLDEN SCALPEL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
As the start was effected, HEI HEI POSH lifted its front feet off the ground.
ENJOY THE GAME began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of SURROUNDED.
FOLLOW THE WIND was slow to begin.
From wide barriers, ACTIVISM, HEAR THE ROAR and DRAGON BACHELOR were all taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, SPICY SIAM was slow to muster speed.
Near the 1700 Metres, ACTIVISM and HEAR THE ROAR bumped.
After travelling wide and without cover for the majority of the race, ENJOY THE GAME, when commencing to give ground, shifted out approaching the 500 Metres and bumped SURROUNDED which became unbalanced. ENJOY THE GAME then shifted in and bumped FOLLOW THE WIND, causing both horses to become unbalanced. As ENJOY THE GAME continued to weaken, HEI HEI POSH was shifted out away from the heels of that horse after the 500 Metres.
Rounding the Home Turn, XILAI XIANZI was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DRAGON BACHELOR.
At the entrance to the Straight, DRAGON BACHELOR shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of SPICY SIAM.
DRAGON BACHELOR had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Approaching the 300 Metres, MALAYAN PEARL was steadied when disappointed for running between WIN ALONG and FOLLOW THE WIND, both of which shifted ground. MALAYAN PEARL was then held up for clear running until after the 300 Metres.
SPICY SIAM, which was taken back through the field in the middle stages, was badly held up for clear running until approaching the 200 Metres.
Passing the 200 Metres, HEI HEI POSH was taken wider by ACTIVISM which shifted out under pressure.
When questioned, Apprentice C Y Lui stated that although he had been instructed to lead on NAMJONG TURBO, he felt that the tempo of the race after the 1600 Metres was solid and when MAGNUMOUS improved to his outside and appeared to be travelling keenly, he elected to allow that horse to continue into the lead rather than becoming engaged in a speed battle with that horse. He said he was content to sit behind MAGNUMOUS until that horse slowed the tempo of the race somewhat after the 1100 Metres. He added when this happened NAMJONG TURBO commenced to travel keenly and he attempted to shift away from the heels of MAGNUMOUS and obtain a position outside that horse. He said however that he was unable to shift FUNNY FORTUNE out at that time and both horses became unbalanced after making contact. He said when he was unable to shift FUNNY FORTUNE out, he was then obliged to maintain his position behind that horse. He further stated that near the 350 Metres NAMJONG TURBO was checked when unable to improve between MAGNUMOUS which was giving ground and FUNNY FORTUNE which raced tight inside WIN ALONG. He said NAMJONG TURBO was then badly held up for clear running until after the 200 Metres. A veterinary inspection of NAMJONG TURBO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MAGNUMOUS, M Chadwick stated that as he was instructed to ride the horse in a forward position, he rode it along in the early stages. He said after shifting in to race outside the leader NAMJONG TURBO in the early stages, MAGNUMOUS commenced to prove difficult to settle when FUNNY FORTUNE improved to its outside approaching the 1500 Metres. He said as MAGNUMOUS was over-racing, he allowed the horse to stride into the lead in the hope that it would then settle after obtaining the rail. He added however that MAGNUMOUS continued to travel keenly and would not properly settle. He said because of the manner in which MAGNUMOUS was racing, the horse was then not able to close off the race in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of MAGNUMOUS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on XILAI XIANZI at the request of Trainer R Gibson. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, XILAI XIANZI will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
NAMJONG TURBO, MALAYAN PEARL and WIN ALONG were sent for sampling.
