Racing Incident Report
On arrival at the Start, it was noted that JOY TOGETHER had lost its right front plate. This plate was refitted. JOY TOGETHER was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
As the start was effected, STAR MAJESTIC lifted its front feet off the ground and consequently lost ground.
TELECOM PRINCE was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start, PLAIN RED BANNER shifted out and bumped GO SANDY GO.
For some distance after the 1200 Metres, ZACHARY was checked away from the heels of SPICY DRAGON when proving difficult to settle.
At the 900 Metres, TELECOM PRINCE was crowded for room inside SPICY DRAGON which was taken in by STAR MAJESTIC (D Whyte). A short distance later, STAR MAJESTIC was shifted out to relieve the tightening to runners to its inside. ZACHARY, which was following SPICY DRAGON, was steadied away from the heels of that horse in consequence. D Whyte was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners to his inside. After this, STAR MAJESTIC was left racing wide and without cover.
JOY TOGETHER was badly held up for clear running from the 250 Metres and near the 200 Metres shifted out marginally when awkwardly placed close to the heels of PLAIN RED BANNER and in doing so became unbalanced after being bumped on the hindquarters by TELECOM PRINCE which was also having difficulty obtaining clear running. When bumped on the hindquarters, JOY TOGETHER became unbalanced and shifted out further, resulting in TELECOM PRINCE being steadied passing the 150 Metres when crowded for room between that horse and GO SANDY GO. Then near the 100 Metres, JOY TOGETHER, which continued to be held up, was shifted to the outside of GRAND HARBOUR to obtain clear running.
In the Straight, GRAND HARBOUR hung in under pressure and proved difficult to ride.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of FIONN’S PRIDE, Trainer K W Lui stated that the horse, which was having just its 5th race start in Hong Kong and its first over 1600 Metres, is one-paced which had not been suited by the shorter distances of its races in its initial racing campaign in Hong Kong. He said at its most recent start over 1400 Metres, FIONN’S PRIDE had been better suited, however, in that race had raced wide and without cover from barrier 11. He said in addition to FIONN’S PRIDE being suited by the step-up in distance today, he was also of the opinion that FIONN’S PRIDE drawing barrier 3 had been to its advantage as the horse was able to obtain a good position throughout the race.
When questioned regarding ZACHARY being ridden back in the field, Trainer K W Lui stated that, in his opinion, ZACHARY races best when not ridden to lead and when able to obtain cover. He said there had been occasions when ZACHARY had been required to lead and on the majority of those occasions he had been disappointed with the manner in which the horse had failed to finish off those races. He said at the horse’s most recent starts when it raced well, including its last start when finishing second, ZACHARY had been able to obtain cover when drawn favourably and following ZACHARY drawing 14 for today’s race, he believed it was unlikely that the horse would be able to be ridden in a forward position without being left racing wide and without cover or in the lead. He added therefore after discussing the matter with A Suborics who had ridden the horse in its recent starts, it was decided that it would be in the best interests of ZACHARY for the horse to be shifted across behind runners in the early stages and then ridden up on the inside to obtain as close a position as possible but importantly to obtain cover. A veterinary inspection of ZACHARY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that PLAIN RED BANNER had bled from both nostrils.
A veterinary inspection of ON THE WAY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
STAR MAJESTIC, FIONN’S PRIDE and JOY TOGETHER were sent for sampling.
