He added that he was able to set a moderate tempo outside of standard time during the middle stages but on straightening his mount failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. Trainer stated that the preference was to ride the horse with cover having regard to its weight of 133 lbs. He said nevertheless he was still disappointed with the horse’s performance. Post-race vet inspection did not show any significant findings. Performance as a last start winner was considered to be disappointing. Has since performed to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and passed an official vet exam - Race 017.

11 K198  VON BAER  22/10/2025   117  VON BAER (K198) from the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Raced keenly in the middle stages. When questioned regarding his riding rider stated that from the outside barrier he was instructed to ride his mount in a conservative manner in the early stages and endeavour to obtain runs to the inside in the Home Straight. He said after settling back in the field his mount was positioned behind 5th placegetter throughout the race and from the 500M he elected to remain racing behind 5th placegetter to comply with his instructions to take inside runs. He added that when his mount continued to travel well that resulted in it improving to the inside of 5th placegetter and then being held up behind another runner in the Home Straight. When questioned as to why he did not improve to the outside of 5th placegetter rider stated that his focus was on complying with his instructions but in retrospect he agreed with the Stewards that his best option would have been to improve to the outside of 5th placegetter after the 500M. Trainer confirmed the instructions issued and in particular confirmed he had requested rider to endeavour to take runs towards the inside in the Home Straight. After considering his explanation and the instructions issued the Stewards found the tactics adopted by rider were reasonable in the circumstances - Race 117.
