The Met S1 - 6, 26/01/2019, Saturday Post Time 23:10

1

Legal Eagle

A superstar who won 15 of his 27 races and until recently was unbeaten in 10 runs over 1600m. He will be having his fourth attempt at winning this race and although has been runner-up twice and fourth last year, it is getting harder as he gets older. Not a runner you can ever write off.

2

Head Honcho

He is being spoken about as the best outsider in this field. He has won six of his last seven races and last time was a runaway winner of the G2 Premier Trophy in which he beat Made To Conquer by 3.5 lengths. He is now 2lb better off.

3

Hat Puntano

An Argentinian import who won the 2017 G2 Charity Mile at Turffontein but he has been outclassed in all of his runs in the Cape and is likely to suffer the same fate this time.

4

Made To Conquer

Looks well held by Head Honcho and is probably better over further but Justin Snaith has fitted him in blinkers and apparently his work has been very good.

5

Milton

Strong front runner and the likely pacemaker but does not have the class to win in a field of this nature.

6

Kampala Campari

Ran a great race when touched off by Doublemint in the G2 Peninsula Handicap (1800m) but does not have the form to cause an upset in this field.

7

Do It Again

After his win in the G1 Queen’s Plate (1600m) he became the highest merit rated horse in the country. He also won last year’s Durban July and is said to be working like a train back home. Jockey Richard Fourie is extremely confident that he is on the right horse and there is no doubt he will be very hard to beat. A confident selection.

8

Undercover Agent

He was well supported to win the Queen’s Plate but after hitting the front early in the straight, ran out of steam. Could place but is well held by Do It Again and Rainbow Bridge.

9

Rainbow Bridge

Very exciting sort who won his first five starts before finishing fourth in the G2 Green Point Stakes (1600m), beaten just 0.15 lengths by Legal Eagle, Undercover Agent and Do It Again but proved no match for the latter with a 3.05-length third in the Queen’s Plate. Anton Marcus rides but it is hard to see him turning the tables on Do It Again.

10

Tap O’ Noth

A promising three-year-old who has had a few soundness issues and has not trained as a four-year-old. Has ability but on recent form it would come as major shock should he win.

11

Eyes Wide Open

The winner of two G1 races including last year’s Cape Derby. He raced wide in the Peninisula Handicap and was beaten just 4.55 lengths. He is now 15 lb better off and is capable of running a place in this line-up.

12

Doublemint

Came back from a layoff to win the G2 Peninisula Handicap (1800m).  Although he should improve, Justin Snaith’s least fancied runner will need something spectacular to feature in this field at the weights.

13

Oh Susanna

Brilliant daughter of Street Cry who became the first three-year-old filly in more than 100 years to win the Sun Met when she got home by 0.5 lengths. She carried only 113 lb last year and is up 13 lb this time so she has her work cut out. She is the runner Richard Fourie, who rides Do It Again, makes his main danger.
