Randwick Racecourse – Track Analysis (Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day):

As the biggest racing venue located in the eastern part of Sydney, the rectangularly configured Randwick Racecourse features a 2227m outer course of 28m in width and with a 410m homestretch that grades slightly uphill towards the finish. Course is slightly undulating, and as per the usual fast fractions in Australian racing, Randwick, with its ample track width and climbing stretch runs, would usually favour closers – unless the track is highly biased.

For the trio of Group 1 events – the Australian Oaks, the Sydney Cup and the featured Queen Elizabeth Stakes – all contested at 2000m and beyond this weekend, stall assignments, in general, post minimal bearings on the competition. For the G1 1600m Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Queen of the Turf Stakes), runners also have all the time they need for proper positioning through an extended 600m stretch run before hitting the first turn; and such is the similar case from the 1200m barrier, where runners for the Percy Sykes Stakes, the Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (Royal Sovereign Stakes) and the Sapphire Stakes will pop out from; all that said, potential full fields would imply a tall order for outside-drawn runners to fill.

In the 2018 running of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes contested on good goings, wonder mare WINX, being held back early, swung eight-wide for an eye-catching move while turning for home, took command at the 200m marker, and scored emphatically, while GAILO CHOP, racing prominently throughout, held on for second, and HAPPY CLAPPER, dropping way back alongside WINX through the early stages, managed to sneak up on the rail and check in for third.

Reviewing the races of Doncaster Mile Day at Randwick on 6th April, a heavy strip still played fair to runners both on and off the speed. With fair skies in Sydney as of late – that will extend through Saturday – a good track will be on deck for this big day, and should it further improves to firm in time, speed horses would get an extra edge in the sprints.
