Tokyo Racecourse – Track Analysis (Tenno Sho Autumn):
On top of its ample track width, and a long homestretch that almost reaches 525m, the Tokyo Racecourse also features its own version of sweeping turns, and deep closers with explosive late speed would find it as effective to pounce home from out wide. That being said, with an uphill drive from some 300m out, all the way to the finish, front-runners at Tokyo have to open up against their competition at the top of the lane, or find it an insuperable task to wire the field. Overall, this is still a fair track with no particular penchant towards any running style, where closers only get a slight edge on a typical race strategically run in Japan.
In the 2018 running of the Tenno Sho Autumn over 2000m contested on firm turf, eventual winner REY DE ORO, from his mid-pack position early, rolled smoothly down the stretch, took the lead inside the final 100m, and won by one and a quarter lengths, while the late-closing SUNGRAZER rallied from way back before edging pacesetter KISEKI for second.
Reviewing the recent race meeting at Tokyo on 20th October, when the track was listed as firm likewise, horses saving ground throughout – be they put to the lead or rallying late from mid-pack – were enjoying a slight advantage. While sunny skies will return just in time this Sunday after showers teasing through the Tokyo area for days, soft turf may still be on deck for this year's running of the Tenno Sho Autumn; hopefully, the strip would dry up swift enough, and that would be good news yet again for runners racing close to the rail.
