Deauville Racecourse – Track Analysis (Poule d'Essai des Poulains Day):

Due to COVID-19 that is still plaguing the Paris area, this year’s edition of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains Day will be a road show to visit the Deauville Racecourse, some 200km west-northwest of the capital. This iconic Normandy venue features two tracks: the inner polytrack which goes 2100m once-around, and the 2200m outer turf oval, with a 1600m chute re-joining the course proper by the top of the 500m homestretch. Other than some minor coastal undulations, both tracks are, by and large, flat as a pool table.

Pertaining to the track configurations as introduced, the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and the Grand Handicap des Milers will now be straight 1600m contests from the chute. Thus in general, runners racing by the stand side would enjoy better footings. To the rest of the day’s undercard on turf, the 1000m Class 2 Allowance will basically face the same conditions as the 1600m straight course; while in the 2000m Class 2 Allowance, horses will break from a chute, travel some 200m before hitting the first turn, then cruise through the 600m backside, before reaching the 1200m marker and swing into a sweeping home bend, where runners would not lose a lot of ground – even when getting floated wide.

Onto the polytrack, runners for the pair of 1900m Class 3 Handicap will break from the gate laying adjacent to the 2000m start on turf, and will race accordingly to their turf counterparts.

With sunny skies extending through the weekend – and into Monday, this year’s edition of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains Day will capitalize on such good weather, and be staged on good to firm goings.
