Chantilly Racecourse – Track Analysis (Prix du Jockey Club & Prix de Diane):
Chantilly, yet another fabled racing venue and training centre in the Paris area, is traditionally home to both the Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix de Diane. Since 2005, the Prix du Jockey Club was cut back from 2400m to the Prix de Diane distance of just 2100m.
Similar to ParisLongchamp, Chantilly is a deceiving strip that sees virtually no end from rail to rail. For both the 2100m Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de Diane field to navigate this clockwise course, sophomores will jockey for positions through an 800m straight before hitting the first right-hander in the form of a brief, slightly ascending elbow. Then, through another 200m straight, the field will face a tight, wicked far turn that has seen many starters to lose precious ground by attempting a prematurely wide move. Finally, the field will race for all their worth in one grueling dog-fight of a 600m stretch run, and is definitely a genuine test of both acceleration and stamina.
In the 2019 edition of the Prix du Jockey Club contested on good turf, SOTTSASS, rated towards rear of midfield through the early stages, found good headway approaching 400m out, took command head-long into the final 200m, and kept on strongly through the final strides to reign supreme, whereas PERSIAN KING, almost hung out to dry the entire trip, could still manage to check in for second, and MOTAMARRIS, almost free-wheeling up front from gate to finish, faded in the final 200m for third.
With Paris getting continuously sunbathed through Sunday, this year’s running of the Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de Diane would be contested on good to firm turf, and stalkers sitting just behind the pace or stalking mid-pack, while drawing low numbers, would probably be poised for a field day.
