Expert Column for New Zealand Derby (S1) (Brett Davis)
S1-1 New Zealand Derby
LA CRIQUE is the only filly contesting this year’s New Zealand Derby and all fingers point to her starting the outright race favourite. Her win in the G2 Avondale Guineas over 2,100m was an exceptional performance from start to finish and took her career record to 5 wins from 7 starts. She possesses all the attributes and artillery to win on the big stage with positional gate speed, a cool head mid-race and blistering acceleration to finish. The longer journey of 2,400m is a discussion point heading into races of this calibre but judged on what we’ve seen, she’ll run it out strongly.
PINARELLO has taken a different path to the New Zealand Derby following a late start to his racing career. He’s clearly a big baby with plenty to experience and absorb but at the same time displays signs of something quite special. Wins in a maiden over 1,600m and a BM65 over 2,100m have been decisive, and exciting, with large margins posted on both occasions. The extra journey won’t be of concern for the son of TAVISTOCK but class is the unanswered question. The whispers however are out and touting him as the winner provided he does everything right.
WHITE NOISE won the G3 Wellington Stakes over 1,600m in November 2021 with blinkers. He’s since elevated his level of performance to greater heights with a polished win in the Listed Te Akau Gingernuts Salver over 2,100m. His latest effort when fourth behind LA CRIQUE in the G2 Avondale Guineas was better than it reads after suffering initial interference when jostling for early race position. He holds a good turn of speed when asked to sprint and gives every indication the longer journey shall suit him better than most.
ARJAY’S FLIGHT only began his racing career at the end of November 2021 and is yet to win a race of any description. A minor placing in the Listed Te Akau Gingernuts Salver rated him a significant improver along with his fourth place in the G2 Waikato Guineas. The 2,400m of the New Zealand Derby shouldn’t pose any issues when you consider he found the line strongly in the G2 Avondale Guineas after losing a plate. Today’s race arrives at the perfect time for the son of HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t run well.
TUTUKAKA has plenty of experience having travelled to Australia for the spring last year. He was wonderful in winning the Listed Geelong Classic over 2,200m before finishing an honest sixth in the G1 Victoria Derby over 2,500m. His return to racing back home followed a short break with a second place in the Listed Karaka Million 3YO Classic, the best of his three runs. It’s arguable whether he’s racing at his peak but he’s certainly capable at the elite level.
SELECTIONS: 13. LA CRIQUE, 7. PINARELLO, 2. WHITE NOISE, 6. ARJAY’S FLIGHT & 1. TUTUKAKA
