Expert Column for Otaki
Maori WFA Classic (S1) (Brett Davis)

S1-1     OtakiMaori WFA Classic

DESERT LIGHTNING has returned in brilliant form. He has 3 wins, 1 second and 1 third in his last five starts. He’s the highest rated runner contesting this coveted G1 event following his decisive victory over LEGARTO in his last start over 1,600m. On that occasion, he chased the runaway leader to the home bend before bursting clear down the home straight to win. If he brings that level of form to the races again this weekend then there won’t be any dangers or reasons for concern.

LA CRIQUE hasn’t been able to win since her victory in the G1 Arrowfield Stud Plate in October 2022, but did finish second in the race last year behind LEVANTE. She’s had some ups and downs during recent events and was even quoted as being angry after finishing down the track at Hastings in September. She can handle all conditions but is more comfortable in rhythm on the softer tracks and a definite chance of potentially trying to lead all the way.

PUNTURA arrives in arguably career best form following a hat-trick of wins and was desperately unlucky in the run prior. He won the most recent G1 Thorndon Mile with a long sustained run whilst covering a large amount of extra ground. He’ll race up on speed before applying hard core pressure around the 600m point and thrives on the genuine softer ground. He’s won another 1,000m trial since he last raced and can’t be faulted in any way.

BELCLARE won the G1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes against her own sex in April last year and that form would go close to measuring up. She was then spelled before returning in the spring of 2023 but has struggled to really get herself going. However, her past three efforts have shown glimpses of the best she can bring so she’s striking form at the right time. Her recent won in the G2 Westbury Classic was a dominant and faultless display and entitles her to a chance.

EL VENCEDOR hasn’t run too many bad races in his career and is worthy of inclusion for the wider exotics. He won the G3 Eagle Technology Stakes over 1,600m by a big space in December 2023 and has certainly held his own ever since. He chased home PUNTURA with great determination in the G1 Thorndon Mile recently which highlighted his commitment and durability in a race.

SELECTIONS: 1. DESERT LIGHTNING, 8. LA CRIQUE, 2. PUNTURA, 9. BELCLARE & 6. EL VENCEDOR
