Eagle Farm Racecourse – Track Analysis (Queensland Derby Day):

Eagle Farm Racecourse is one of two racecourses in Brisbane and is the premier track in Queensland, playing host to its most famous race, the Stradbroke Handicap.

Eagle Farm is known for being the larger, more expansive of the two tracks in Brisbane. The right-handed circuit has a circumference of 2027m, with a home straight of 434m, a similar length to the home straight at Sha Tin.

The G1 Queensland Derby is one of the highlights of the weeks long Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and has been won in the past by the likes of EAGLE WAY, RUTHVEN and DARK DREAM, who all made their way to Hong Kong to race their following their wins in the race. The 2400m contest begins from the top of the straight at Eagle Farm, with the field racing for approximately 500m before turning out of the straight. They’ll then gallop for another 300m before entering the back straight at the 1600m. After a lengthy run along the back, the runners turn off that section of the course with less than 1000m to go, before beginning to make their moves near the home turn. Once they turn into the home straight, they’ll have 400m to run before they’ll reach the winning post. History shows that most Queensland Derby winners have come from inside to middle barriers.

Last year’s Queensland Derby was won by KOVALICA, who settled midfield under James McDonald’s guidance and came with a well-timed run to hit the front early in the straight before coming away to score easily. Runner up FAME finished off well after coming from a long way back while STROKE OF LUCK settled midfield and finished third.

In the G1 Kingsford Smith Cup over 1300m, the field has a short run of 300m before they reach the first turn and head to the side of the track, which eventually brings them into the home straight. Since this race was transferred from Doomben to Eagle Farm in 2013, statistics would suggest that it is tough to win this race from an outside barrier draw. Only two horses in the past ten renewals have won this event from double figure barriers. The G3 Fred Best Classic over 1400m will face a similar start, however, they’ll have a bit more time to find a suitable position in running given the extra distance they have before reaching the first turn.

On the other hand, the 1200m starting point for the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes is a tricky one as the big field has a run of just over 200m before turning to the side of the track. Consequently, horses with wide barriers are at a distinct disadvantage.

Rain is forecast for the lead up to Queensland Derby Day and on race day as well, so it’s likely that the meeting will be held on a soft track. Given that this is the first time for a few weeks that racing has been held at Eagle Farm, the track is likely to be in good condition, with the rail most likely to be in the true position.
