 Expert - Catrin Nack
Catrin became hooked with racing when she watched ZAUBERER ploughing through the mud to win the German Derby in 1978. She ventured into racehorse-ownership in 1994, and this horse, a mare, is still with her at the tender age of 30. Catrin and her husband have been running several syndicates, mainly with homebred horses, and continue to breed in partnerships. She joined the German racing newsletter Turf-Times as a freelance writer in 2010 and has been contributing about English and Irish racing, with a focus on National Hunt, until 2023.

S2-1     World Pool Christoph Frhr. v. Gumppenberg-Memorial

The World Pool Christoph Frhr. v. Gumppenberg-Memorial is open for 2YO who were sold at Germany’s sole Auction-house, the BBAG. Two horses rightly head the market, TULPAR and THURLOW. The former ran three times, so is one of the most experienced runners. He took a similar contest over slightly shorter on his latest outing in Düsseldorf early September. Stamina shouldn’t be an issue, but he has to give weight all around.

THURLOW impressed when winning a maiden at his first and so far only start. Classically bred by Germany’s preeminent sire SOLDIER HOLLOW and in receipt of two pounds, he represents major connections and is a solid choice.

ZAFIRELLI carries a rare Hungarian suffix but is by an English sire who was all the rage this season. ZAFIRELLI finished second to TULPAR on this only start. These three colts are the only horses with solid and concrete from and it would be a major surprise if the winner wouldn’t be coming from these three.

Three fillies including ALL IN LOGO, KELANI and LILI MARLEEN, are receiving a sex allowance so carry less weight. Their form isn’t up to their male´s opponents though, and picking one is more a matter of gut feeling. Two trainers accepted a slight overweight for their charges, with Mickael Barzalona naturally a fascinating jockey booking for LILI MARLEEN. It remains to be seen if he can make a major difference though.

Have an eye on the market as some shrewd trainers are represented here, with Michael Figge, who trains at this track, one to keep on side. His filly KELANI’s form is hard to judge, but she had two runs so far and hinted a slight improvement on her latest start.

S2-2     HKJC World Pool Handicap

HKJC World Pool Handicap is a 1,400m race and with full fields of 16 runners. Frank Fuhrmann is a name to note in sprint handicaps in particular, 1,400m races are sort of stretching his horses' stamina even. His horses run hard and often, and can spring a “surprise” on any given day, and at huge odds as such. Bauyrzhan Murzabayev is an eye-catching jockey booking for his stable so SEVEN ACES must go on the shortlist.

Karoly Kerekes has his string in great form, this will be his last raceday as a Munich-based trainer and his runner PALIMERA has a top German jockey on board. WINTERWEIDE travels a long way to run here, her trainer has two more runners on the undercard though. Note trainer Jutta Mayer, who trains at the track, and her SCHWARZ BLAU seems of particular interest under a very light weight.

Another local trainer to note is no doubt John David Hillis, who in total runs four horses in the two World Pool Handicaps but relies on CARLTON BANKS in this race, owned by his daughter. Let’s see if CARLTON BANKS can provide some family celebrations.

Arguably the highest profile trainer in the race is Andreas Suborics, who saddles QUANTANAMERA in the big one itself and relies on LUZUM here. His lady jockey claims 3 kilos and if would be very dangerous to dismiss this pair.

S2-3     Wettstar joins World Pool Handicap

The draw might come into play in the 2,000m Handicap with the very short run to the first bend, while the runners have more time to sort themselves out in the remaining races. Take a look at horses drawn in the middle, as a slow start and inner draw might get your choice on the back foot.

Trainer Sarka Schutz runs MOON POWER, and while she is not happy with her stall 11, she reports her charge in very good from. Also note Michael Figge NOREIA’S SECONDO under a valuable 5kilo claimer. NAJEM SHALGHODA with his eye-catching jockey booking is another tentative choice.

SELECTIONS: 13. PINGPONG, 3. MOON POWER, 11. NAJEM SHALGHODA, 9. ROSE OF ENGLAND & 12. LUITPOLD

3RD DOUBLE SELECTIONS (4 unit bets):

S2-4:
Banker – 4. MARQUISAT
Selections – 5. STRAIGHT, 7. TIFFANY, 8. ANCIENT WISDOM & 6. QUANTANAMERA

S2-4     Grosser Preis Von Bayern

Grosser Preis Von Bayern looks a cracking race, with 11 horses declared. The race, run over the classic Derby trip of 2,400m on what looks likely to be autumn ground, shall put emphasis on stamina, something the German breeding industry is well known for. There is no clear favourite at time of writing, making this year´s running an even more interesting betting preposition. The male Classic Generation is represented by a runner from the English and the German Derby’s, and both these colts may well be the place to start.

ANCIENT WISDOM brings high class form to the table, having won a G1 as a juvenile and finishing second in England’s principal Derby trial on his seasonal reappearance. Things didn’t work out in the Epsom Derby itself behind a certain CITY OF TROY, and while he bounced back to form in a British G3 over slightly further in July, he hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since. It remains to be seen if he is fully wound up for this, but he has a strong chance nonetheless.

STRAIGHT is a fascinating contender. While his overall form will not blow you away, he has been a revelation since changing stables, and is very firmly on the up. He was able to show only glimpses of his talent earlier in his career, and if he can continue his stunning upward curve, he can go very close indeed. He has a new pair of hands on the reins, but Murzabayev is a local champion and a tip-top rider.

QUANTANAMERA is one of two older fillies. Always held in high regard, she sometimes is her own worst enemy and needs to settle better than on her latest outing at Ascot. If she runs to her best, she can go close.

Last but by no means least are two the elder foreign raiders, MARQUISAT and TIFFANY. The former, Godolphin-owned, is trained in France by Andre Fabre, a tip in itself. Without winning this season, the lightly-raced 4YO showed excellent form in defeat and could well come out on top here; he heads the betting at time of writing.

To give him most to think about could well be TIFFANY, trained in Newmarket by Sir Mark Prescott. Prescott knows a thing or two about German racing and training fillies, he has long made it a habit to plunder our best prizes with vastly improving fillies and mares; don’t forget what ALPINISTA did in her “German season” before she went on to win a Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. While TIFFANY may not be up to that, she is improving at the rate of knots and culminated her excellent season with a 3rd in the fillies and mares G1 race at Ascots Champion’s Day. She may well put the icing on the cake here.

SELECTIONS: 4. MARQUISAT, 5. STRAIGHT, 7. TIFFANY, 8. ANCIENT WISDOM & 6. QUANTANAMERA
