Racing Incident Report
In the early stages, INDIGENOUS had a tendency to lay in. About the 600 Metres, HELENE VITALITY was steadied when momentarily disappointed for running inside INDIGENOUS. After the 600 Metres, INDIGENOUS was steadied when crowded for room between ORIENTAL EXPRESS and INDUSTRIAL PIONEER. The Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred at about the 500 Metres when COURAGE STAR (E Saint-Martin) drifted away from the running rail, thereby carrying LUCKY STALLION (D Whyte) wider and allowing STRONGHEART an uninterrupted run along the rail. When questioned about the incident, E Saint-Martin said at about the 500 Metres he looked to his outside to establish if he could shift out into what he considered to be better ground. Whilst he was aware that LUCKY STALLION was on his outside, he considered by drifting as he did on the turn that he would not unduly hamper LUCKY STALLION. In evidence D Whyte was concerned that the incident jeopardised his chance of finishing 2nd in the race and may even have had a bearing on him winning. At the conclusion of the inquiry, E Saint-Martin was told in slightly different circumstances, he could have been in a position where he could have to answer a very serious charge. He himself acknowledged such incidents must not be allowed to go on in Hong Kong racing and he was told by the Stewards this type of riding cannot be condoned. HELENE VITALITY and INDIGENOUS were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
