Racing Incident Report
Whilst parading before the horse, CELEBRATION became fractious and made contact with a rail. After arriving at the Start, CELEBRATION was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. In the early stages, GALLANT HORSE proved very difficult to settle and was obliged to race wide without any cover. About 100 Metres out, SUPER SPRINT attempted to jump a mark on the track, as a consequence of this became unbalanced and blundered. After the 100 Metres, SIROCCO was checked when disappointed for running between SPLENDID PATROL which shifted out and CELEBRATION which shifted in. In view of the circumstances, no action was taken. When questioned, S Dye (RIVER CENTAINE) explained the horse last season was proving very difficult to settle in its races, was racing towards the front and pulling hard. He said because RIVER CENTAINE is difficult to manage on the track, it is usually ridden by the trainer or one of the heavy weight work riders. He said he has not ridden the horse work but has trialed it. He also pointed out before the race Mr J Size had said to him the new bit the horse was using seemed to have encouraged RIVER CENTAINE to settle. It was suggested by the trainer if RIVER CENTAINE left the gates well, he should take up a position somewhere towards the front, but he was to ensure RIVER CERTAINE was relaxed in the run. S Dye said RIVER CENTAINE left the gates a little awkwardly, shifted in, became unbalanced, then he thought it settled nicely and travelled well and as a consequence got much further back in the race than was the intention. He said however because of the manner in which the horse was travelling, he felt it was advisable to leave it in the position which he found himself. He said during the race he followed VALUATE, on straightening was able to shift out and find running inside IMPRESSIONIST, and he was of the view in the circumstances the horse had enjoyed a good run in the race. He said in the Straight when in the clear RIVER CENTAINE finished off well, but did have a tendency to become momentarily unbalanced on occasions and change legs. He concluded by saying although the horse got back today, it may be that in the future if racing over more ground, RIVER CENTAINE will take up a position somewhat closer to the front. The explanations submitted by S Dye were accepted. After the race, D Whyte (OPTIC FRIENDLY) expressed concern with the manner in which the horse was stretching out. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. LUCKY STALLION, RIVER CENTAINE and CELEBRATION were sent for sampling.
After racing yesterday, OPTIC FRIENDLY was examined, no significant lameness was detected. However, today on examination, the horse pulled up quite sore. Dr Stewart is of the view this could be as a result of strain in the fetlock and suspensory area. Before OPTIC FRIENDLY can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
