Racing Incident Report

BULL'S EYE left the gates very awkwardly and threw its head about, as a consequence of this lost a lot of ground. About the 1300 Metres, BOWMAN'S CROSSING, which for some time had been racing awkwardly just inside the heels of MOMENTUM, shifted ground and bumped the hindquarters of GIFT. Just after this incident, BOWMAN'S CROSSING was checked and shifted abruptly across the heels of MOMENTUM and bumped FERRULE. In view of all the circumstances which existed, it was decided no action could be taken. In the early and middle stages, PEAK POWER proved difficult to settle, pulled hard and several times was awkward on the heels of GOOD RECORD. In the middle stages, SUN SHINE RIVER was inclined to race ungenerously and throw its head about. Also in the middle stages, GIFT got its head on the side and hung out. About the 200 Metres, A Suborics (MONARDS) dropped his whip. When asked about the run of FERRULE, F Coetzee said the horse proved very difficult for him to settle in the early stages and for some time over-raced. He said approaching and rounding the Home Turn he endeavoured to keep BOWMAN'S CROSSING in a pocket on his inside, but FERRULE was not travelling well enough to do so and also was inclined to lay away from BOWMAN'S CROSSING. He said in the Straight FERRULE was quite disappointing and he was of the view this was primarily due to the reluctance of the horse to settle in the early stages. FERRULE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, FERRULE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was carried out and he said there was a significant amount of mucus (phlegm) and blood in the horse's windpipe. Before FERRULE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. BOWMAN'S CROSSING and GIFT were sent for sampling.
