Racing Incident Report
TOM'S FIRST was slow to begin. SUPER BLITZ began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the outside of its gate. SUNBELL was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of LIBERAL'S CHOICE which shifted in. BLUE STITCH, which was standing badly, began awkwardly. In the early stages, AIN'T HERE proved difficult to settle. At the 1400 Metres, TOM'S FIRST was steadied when crowded for room by SUPER BLITZ which was carried in by SUNBELL (J Quinn). J Quinn was reprimanded and told to exercise more care. From about the 1000 Metres, FLYING BISHOP was obliged to race three wide and without cover. Near the 600 Metres, SUNBELL was steadied when crowded for room between LUCKSWELL and SUPER BLITZ. Shortly after straightening, AIN'T HERE was carried in by SUNBELL which shifted in. Near the 200 Metres, LIBERAL'S CHOICE was momentarily steadied when disappointed for running between MONARDS and FLYING BISHOP, both of which shifted ground. F Coetzee (TRICCOLO) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in 3rd or 4th position, however, after beginning well the horse immediately took hold of the bit and raced forward into the lead. He said after crossing to the fence the horse continued to over-race and he was of the view that he would have had to fight against the horse to bring it back underneath him and in his opinion this would have been detrimental to the horse's chances. F Coetzee was told his explanations would be recorded. SUNBELL was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of SUNBELL after the race did not show any significant findings. BLUE STITCH, ACROBATIC and MONARDS were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported MONARDS had blood present at the left nostril. An endoscopic examination was carried out which showed no blood in the horse's trachea and as such it was not declared an official bleeder.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 29 September 2003)
After the race, SUNBELL which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. SUNBELL was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer D Cruz yesterday and at this time was found to be lame left front leg. Before racing again, SUNBELL will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
