Racing Incident Report
TOUCH OF CLASS began very awkwardly and lost a significant amount of ground at the start. EASY PUNCH and DOUBLE PLEASURE were slow to begin. On jumping, BACK SEAT DRIVER shifted out and bumped KING ERIE. Approaching the 800 Metres, TROPHY, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when close to the heels of BRILLIANT ATTORNEY. At the 600 Metres, DOUBLE PLEASURE was bumped by TROPHY which became unbalanced when racing tight inside the heels of JOYFUL MASTER. After the 300 Metres, BACK SEAT DRIVER and JOYFUL MASTER were hampered and carried wider by TROPHY which itself shifted out after becoming unbalanced when bumped by DOUBLE PLEASURE which shifted out to find clear running. Just prior to the winning post, BRILLIANT ATTORNEY was carried out by TOUCH OF CLASS which shifted to the outside of ELETTARIN to continue going forward. In the Straight, ELETTARIN hung in and proved difficult to ride. Apprentice M W Leung (BACK SEAT DRIVER) said he had been instructed if the horse began well to endeavour to find cover and race in a forward position. He said BACK SEAT DRIVER began awkwardly, then failed to muster speed in the early stages and as a result was then obliged to race four wide and without cover throughout. He said in the Straight he rode BACK SEAT DRIVER out hands and heels to the best of his ability, however, because the horse felt as though it was doing its best he did not use the whip. JOYFUL MASTER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of JOYFUL MASTER after the race did not reveal any significant findings. ELETTARIN, SPEEDY EXPRESS and HONOURABLE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 18 December 2003)
JOYFUL MASTER, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. JOYFUL MASTER was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer S Woods this morning and at this time was noted to be moving stiffly behind. Before being allowed to race again, JOYFUL MASTER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
