Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, FABULOUS became fractious, was slow to begin and lost a considerable amount of ground. On jumping, L'ENFANT got its head up and lost ground. PORT OF HOPE began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped DANEPRINT. TELECOM BABE began awkwardly. From the outside gate, MAJESTIC DANCER was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position close to the rail but at the rear. After the 1200 Metres, ELVIS, which had initially been ridden along to go forward and had been crossed by SWEETIE, commenced to over-race, shifted in when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SWEETIE and brushed the running rail. Making the Home Turn, MAJESTIC DANCER hung out. After the 400 Metres, TELECOM BABE was steadied when close to the heels of ALLEGRO. For a considerable distance approaching the 200 Metres, ELVIS was steadied when held up and unable to obtain clear running behind SHAXI RICHES which was giving ground. After the 200 Metres, TELECOM BABE was steadied away from the heels of PREMIER CRU which was giving ground. Near the 100 Metres, MAJESTIC DANCER was steadied when having difficulty obtaining clear running between DANEPRINT and L'ENFANT. Prior to weighed-in being semaphored, O Doleuze, the rider of RENA'S WUNDERBAR, 4th placegetter, lodged a protest/objection against SWEETIE (Apprentice H W Lai) being declared the 2nd placegetter alleging interference in the Home Straight. During the course of the formal protest/objection hearing, O Doleuze submitted that his mount had been hampered after the 400 Metres and again near the 200 Metres by SWEETIE when that horse shifted out, however, he was of the opinion after looking at the films that he would not have finished in front of SWEETIE had the interference to RENA'S WUNDERBAR which did take place not occurred. He therefore sought leave of the Stewards to withdraw the protest/objection he had lodged. Acting under the powers conferred on them by Rule 124, the Stewards acceded to the request of O Doleuze and granted him leave to withdraw the protest/objection. Accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. At a subsequent inquiry, it was established that near the 300 Metres SWEETIE shifted out and inconvenienced RENA'S WUNDERBAR. Apprentice Lai immediately stopped riding and straightened his mount. Shortly afterwards, Apprentice Lai momentarily lost the use of his left side rein, once he had re-gathered this, again commenced to ride SWEETIE along, the horse again shifted out near the 200 Metres, hampering RENA'S WUNDERBAR and inconveniencing TEA FOR CHAMP and PORT OF HOPE. Apprentice Lai again stopped riding and straightened his mount. In the circumstances and considering Apprentice Lai's relative inexperience, the Stewards believed it appropriate to severely reprimand him and tell him in similar circumstances he would be expected to exercise greater care than he did on this occasion. ELVIS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ELVIS after the race did not show any significant findings. PORT OF HOPE, SUNDAY DELIGHT and SWEETIE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported SHAXI RICHES had bled from both nostrils.
