Racing Incident Report

After entering the dirt track, SPEED OF LIGHT was reluctant to proceed to the barrier. W Smith dismounted. The horse was hand walked for a short distance before W Smith remounted and rode it to the barrier. SPEED OF LIGHT began very awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall and lost ground. SPLIT SECONDS, which had drawn a wide gate, was slow to begin and immediately taken behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. CLASSIC PRIDE began awkwardly and shortly after the start was steadied when crowded for room between CHINA WORLD and WINNING SMILE which shifted out after making contact with YELLOW DRAGON. After this incident, WINNING SMILE continued to shift out and bumped the hindquarters of CHINA WORLD which as a result became unbalanced behind. WINNING SMILE then shifted in and bumped YELLOW DRAGON. In the early stages, CLASSIC PRIDE, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up on a number of occasions and making the first turn was steadied away from the heels of WINNING SMILE which in turn was steadied away from the heels of CHINA WORLD which was steadied away from the heels of BARFOLD HERO which shifted in when barely clear. CLASSIC PRIDE then continued to prove difficult to settle and near the 1300 Metres got its head up when again being steadied away from the heels of WINNING SMILE. At the 1200 Metres, STOIC was bumped by WINNING SMILE which shifted out as R Fradd was pulling down his visor. From near the 700 Metres until straightening, SPLIT SECONDS was held up and unable to improve when racing behind YELLOW DRAGON and inside CUPID. After straightening, SPLIT SECONDS shifted out and bumped CUPID when endeavouring to improve between that horse and SPEED OF LIGHT which was giving ground. Throughout the race, TABBRIS and THE FACULTY raced wide and without cover. Also throughout the race, ACE OF PACE was inclined to lay out. D Boeuf (BARFOLD HERO), 5th placegetter, pleaded guilty to a charge of having failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards. For this breach, D Boeuf was fined $20,000. D Whyte (YELLOW DRAGON) explained at no stage of the race did the horse appear comfortable. He said previously YELLOW DRAGON had performed well when racing on the surface, however, today with the surface being rain affected YELLOW DRAGON did not give him a response. YELLOW DRAGON was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, YELLOW DRAGON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings, however, he noted the horse had damaged a tooth. The performance of YELLOW DRAGON was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, YELLOW DRAGON will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINNING SMILE, FAIRPLAY and SPLIT SECONDS were sent for sampling.
