Racing Incident Report
L'ENFANT bounded in the air at the start and lost ground. MAGICAL LOT, MASTER SPIRIT and SPECTACULAR TIMES were slow to begin. Near the 1300 Metres, MAGICAL LOT was crowded for room and GOLD DIGGER steadied when also crowded for room inside KING OF TURBOT (M Rodd) which was hanging in. M Rodd was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to relieve the pressure he was applying to horses on his inside. Approaching the 900 Metres, STORMY RUNNER became unbalanced and shifted in behind SPECTACULAR TIMES. As a result of this, MILLENNIUM DAWN was bumped. Shortly after this, STORMY RUNNER again became unbalanced and was steadied when crowded for room between FORTUNE ALL TIMES which shifted in and MILLENNIUM DAWN which shifted out. For some distance after the 600 Metres, SPECTACULAR TIMES raced tight on the outside of KING OF TURBOT and inside FIRST KNIGHT. Prior to straightening, L'ENFANT was steadied when close to the heels of MAGICAL LOT. Then shortly after the 400 Metres, L'ENFANT was again steadied when improving into a narrow run inside MAGICAL LOT which at this time was carried in by KING OF TURBOT which was continuing to hang. When KING OF TURBOT was being straightened to relieve the pressure to its inside, M Rodd dropped his right rein. At the 400 Metres, GOLD DIGGER was steadied and shifted to the outside of KING OF TURBOT into clear running. Throughout the race, FIRST KNIGHT travelled wide and without cover. Also throughout the race, KING OF TURBOT hung in badly and proved difficult to ride. When questioned regarding FORTUNE ALL TIMES racing back in the field today, W M Lai said he had been instructed by the horse's trainer, Mr C H Yip, that as the horse had been racing in poor form he should from a wide barrier allow the horse to settle in a rearward position. Mr Yip confirmed the instructions issued to W M Lai, however, he said FORTUNE ALL TIMES had travelled a little further back than he had anticipated. He said at its last start from a wide barrier FORTUNE ALL TIMES was ridden along to lead and tired noticeably in the Straight. Mr Yip was advised in similar circumstances he would be expected to notify the Stewards of his intentions. MAGICAL LOT and STAR OF LIHLIN were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported MAGICAL LOT and STAR OF LIHLIN had bled from both nostrils. MASTER SPIRIT and SPECTACULAR TIMES were sent for sampling. Following the race, it was noted SPECTACULAR TIMES had lost its left hind plate.
