Racing Incident Report

SUCCESSIVE GAINS was withdrawn on 7.5.07 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (swollen right fore fetlock). Before being allowed to race again, SUCCESSIVE GAINS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SEASONS KNACK was slow to begin. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, SUPER DANA became unbalanced and lost ground when crowded for room inside EYE WITNESS which at this time got its head on the side, hung in and bumped SUPER DANA. When this occurred, EYE WITNESS became unbalanced and shifted in further. SEASONS KNACK, which was following, was steadied and shifted to the outside of SUPER DANA. At the 400 Metres, MAVERICK was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of MATIRI KING which commenced to give ground. After the 200 Metres, KINGSGATE GLORY shifted out abruptly. Because of this, A Delpech changed the whip into his left hand. E Saint-Martin (FANTUZZI) explained the horse was racing over 2200 Metres for the first occasion tonight and because of this he was instructed to have the horse in a slightly more forward position than is usual. He said FANTUZZI in addition proved difficult to settle in its races when being ridden more quietly. He said after beginning fairly he rode FANTUZZI along to obtain a forward position and the horse again proved difficult to settle. When questioned regarding the change in riding tactics adopted on GREEN IN BLUE, Mr S Woods, trainer of the horse, explained from the outside barrier with a short run to the first turn, he did not believe GREEN IN BLUE would show sufficient speed to cross runners to its inside and obtain a forward position. He said he anticipated four horses which had drawn towards the inside would go forward and ensure the race was run at an adequate tempo. He therefore instructed S Dye who rode the horse to take GREEN IN BLUE back from the draw to ensure it obtained a position with cover. He said in his opinion GREEN IN BLUE would have to have too much use made of it to obtain a forward position and in his opinion the horse would not be able to finish the race off when ridden in this manner. He did say where GREEN IN BLUE would be ridden in the field in future starts would be dependent on what he anticipated the tempo of the race would be. B Prebble (BEAR DOMINANCE) said in the early stages he anticipated EYE WITNESS which was travelling to his inside would shift to a position on the rail which would allow him to shift across to obtain cover. He said when EYE WITNESS continued to race away from the rail, he near the 1900 Metres commenced to come back in an endeavour to obtain a position behind that horse. He said as he did this HAPPY CONTENDER improved on his inside, causing him to race wide and without cover. He said near the 1600 Metres he looked to his inside and considered taking BEAR DOMINANCE back to a position behind HAPPY CONTENDER, however, in what was a moderately run race he felt this would place him too far away from the leaders, he therefore continued on in this position. BEAR DOMINANCE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BEAR DOMINANCE after the race did not show any significant findings. KINGSGATE GLORY and EYE WITNESS were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported KINGSGATE GLORY had lost its right front plate and MATIRI KING was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, MATIRI KING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
