Racing Incident Report

SPEED OF LIGHT began awkwardly and lost ground. HURRICANE WAY was slow to begin. In the early stages, JOY AND TREASURE proved difficult to settle. After the 1000 Metres, SHOW BRAVELY was left racing wide without cover. After the 600 Metres, JOY AND TREASURE was steadied when awkwardly placed between RED FORTUNE and BIG WINNER. After the 300 Metres, THREE CLUBS, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was shifted to the inside of DOLPHIN STAR. After the 200 Metres, HURRICANE WAY, which was racing tight inside THREE CLUBS, was checked to avoid the heels of DEFLECT which was giving ground. At the 100 Metres, DEFLECT, which was continuing to give ground, was checked when crowded for room inside X-SPEED which was racing tight inside THREE CLUBS and improved into a narrow run between that horse and DOLPHIN STAR which at this time was carried in by BIG WINNER (O Doleuze). In this incident, X-SPEED and THREE CLUBS were crowded for room and lost ground. The Stewards were satisfied THREE CLUBS had a bearing on this incident, however, they nonetheless reprimanded O Doleuze and told him he should ensure he does his utmost to keep his mounts straight in similar circumstances. M Nunes (KNIGHT TEMPLAR) explained when he rode the horse last start he went forward from the outside barrier. He said on that occasion KNIGHT TEMPLAR was disappointing with the manner in which it finished the race off. He said because of this today from a wide barrier he was instructed to ride the horse in about midfield if possible. He said accordingly after beginning well he steadied KNIGHT TEMPLAR in an endeavour to obtain a midfield position, however, it was not until near the 1600 Metres that BIG WINNER which had drawn to his inside was sufficiently clear of him to shift across behind that horse. He said as a consequence KNIGHT TEMPLAR was obliged to travel further back than intended in a rearward position. He said in the Straight KNIGHT TEMPLAR closed the race off nicely along the inside, however, over the final 150 Metres was not able to obtain clear running and because of this was not properly tested. Mr A T Millard, trainer of KNIGHT TEMPLAR, confirmed the riding instructions issued to M Nunes. He said in his opinion KNIGHT TEMPLAR is now racing in a manner which indicates it does not appreciate being pressured to obtain a forward position. DEFLECT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DEFLECT after the race did not show any significant findings. THREE CLUBS, BIG WINNER and DOLPHIN STAR were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 2 May 2007)
DEFLECT, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. DEFLECT was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer P F Yiu this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to have a swollen right front fetlock joint. Before being allowed to race again, DEFLECT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
