Racing Incident Report

On jumping GRAND CRU and BEAUTIFUL DREAMER bumped, causing both horses to lose ground. GOLDEN SUN was slow to begin. HAWKES BAY began awkwardly. Near the 1000 Metres, HAWKES BAY was carried wider by GROWL which shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of ORIENTAL MAGIC which shifted in. After the 1000 Metres, ON SHAN BRAVE was left racing wide without cover. Making the turn after the 800 Metres, GROWL hung out. At the 300 Metres, TCHAIKOVSKY became unbalanced when giving ground. The performance of ON SHAN BRAVE, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ON SHAN BRAVE will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. E Saint-Martin (HAWKES BAY) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse where it was comfortable and he believed, bearing in mind the horse was dropping back in distance today, that this would be about midfield. He said HAWKES BAY began only fairly, he then allowed the horse to gradually improve its position, however, after being carried wider by GROWL near the 1000 Metres he elected to steady and come back behind that horse to avoid racing wide and without cover. He said as a consequence HAWKES BAY was further back than he had intended. He said in the Straight he rode HAWKES BAY vigorously hands and heels and the horse responded fairly. Mr D J Hall, trainer of HAWKES BAY, confirmed he had instructed E Saint-Martin to ride the horse where it was comfortable. He said he had been disappointed with the recent form of HAWKES BAY, therefore he dropped the horse back in distance to see if it would be able to close off in races which were run at a quicker tempo. Mr Hall did say whilst HAWKES BAY made some ground in the Straight, he still believed the horse was disappointing. HAWKES BAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HAWKES BAY after the race did not show any significant findings. ORIENTAL MAGIC, ROYAL PRINCE and TIBER were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported ROYAL PRINCE had sustained a cut to the left hind leg and TCHAIKOVSKY had lost its right front plate.
